1st LT Jay H. Karpin - Jay reported to the 493rd Bomb Group, at McCook Army Air Field, NE, on 5 March 1944, as the Bombardier, with the crew of 2nd LT Donald I. Hogan, and was assigned to the 860th Bomb Squadron. On 17 May, LT Hogan, and his crew, landed at Debach, Suffolk, England, after flying across the North Atlantic. Jay´s first combat mission was flown on 6 June (D-Day) in support of Allied ground troops. During the month of August all 493rd BG crews transitioned from flying the B-24 Liberator to the B-17 Flying Fortress. He was promoted to 1st LT on 3 October. Jay´s 35th, and last, combat mission was flown on 25 November, with the target being a synthetic oil refinery, located in Merseburg, Germany. On 1 December, LT Hogan, and his crew, departed Debach to start their return trip to the States.

Jay was a member of our country´s "Greatest Generation."

Jay was a member of the "493rd Bombardment Group Memorial Association" (veteran run) and the Next Generation "Fighting 493rd Bombardment Group Memorial Association."
