Jean Finley Obituary
She was a delight to all who encountered her, and met everyone with a smile. Whether you knew her as Jean, Mom, or Nana, greetings delivered in her warm southern lilt were enough to brighten any day. She was cherished by her family and many treasured friends.
Born in Danville, Virginia, Jean graduated from Averett College and then received a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia. She became a Registered Nurse and went on to teach nursing there at the Medical College.
In addition to raising two sons, Jean returned to school and received a Master's degree in Library Science from Louisiana State University. She worked as a medical librarian for many years, and especially enjoyed her work at the United Network for Organ Sharing, from where she eventually retired.
Jean and her husband Bill were devoted members of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia for many years. Along with Bill, much of her retirement was dedicated to church ministries. She knitted hats for babies at the local hospital, provided medical transportation, taught English to Burmese refugees, and regularly worked in the community food pantry.
Jean found joy in entertaining friends, traveling, and spending time with her family. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cultivating houseplants, and especially reading.
In 2020 Jean and Bill relocated to Maryland to be near family. Although her faith traveled with her, her heart never truly left the warm faith community of Tabernacle.
Jean is survived by her loving husband Sidney W. (Bill) Finley II, sister Susan Bond Fields, sons Sidney W. (Sid) Finley III (wife Deb Macuch) and John C. Finley (wife Deanna Finley), grandchildren Christopher Finley (wife Rosemary Finley), Timothy Finley, Hannah Finley, Angus Finley, and Juliet Finley, and great-grandchildren Xavier Finley, Eamon Finley, and Cecilia Finley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elvin H. Bond Sr. and Katherine Bond, sister Laura Bond Bingham, and brother James P. Bond.
A funeral service will be held for Jean at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1925 Grove Avenue, Richmond, VA 23220 on Sunday December 7th, 2025, at 1:30 PM.
