Jeanette Scofield Obituary

Jeanette Lalonde Scofield passed from this life on 11 December 2025 in Culpeper, Virginia. She blessed those who knew her with love, dedication, and a beautiful spirit each of her 81 years. An extraordinary woman who strived for excellence in all her pursuits, she remained remarkably humble and unpretentious. A child of French Acadiana, Jeanette grew up immersed in culture with a large extended family in Leonville, Louisiana. While exploring with her three sisters, she discovered her love for the Earth and laid a foundation that developed her into an award-winning culinary artist, gardener, and naturalist. Gifted with an exceptional work ethic, Jeanette retired from the National Geographic Society as Payroll Manger and formerly served in that position at The Nature Conservancy. Jeanette journeyed together with her husband, John Hoyt Scofield, for many years as life partners and friends. They often shared conversation and a drink in the early evening, reflecting on their family, the day's events, and the opportunities tomorrow would bring. Jeanette held her family most closely to her heart. She raised her two children with unbounded love, carefully cultivating them into adults as a Cub Scout leader, 4-H leader, and softball coach. Later, she ensured her children and grandchildren vacationed together annually at Atlantic beaches, Appalachian Mountains, and state parks. Jeanette prepared exceptional meals and told stories, showing her propensity for kindness through empathy and humor. Her cheeks pinked when she laughed. Jeanette's husband (John Hoyt Scofield), her parents (Walter Joseph Lalonde and Rita Theresa (Rivette) Lalonde ), sister (Linda Marie Lalonde Lanclos), and brother-in-law (John Terry Martin) predecease her. Her grandson (Nicholas Todd Smith), whom she taught to dance, also predeceases her. Jeanette's children, Jon Noel Jones (Lori), and Jodi Jones Smith (Ron Kesner) remain, as do her sisters, Judith Faith Martin and Joann Manzanares (Juan (Kiko)). She is survived by grandchildren Zebulon Noel Jones (E. Lin Chow), Emilia Christine McNeill (Thomas), Benjamin Paul Jones (Jessica Nolan), Jacob Earl Smith (Isabelle Fairineau), Victoria Jeanette Jones, great-grandson Paul Arthur McNeill, and a yet-unborn great-grandchild. Jeanette requested no services upon her death. A lifelong Roman Catholic, please consider a prayer for the repose of her beautiful soul. Her family and friends will miss her profoundly.
