Jeffrey McClellan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ponders Funeral Home Melrose Chapel - Dalton from Nov. 27 to Dec. 4, 2025.
Mr. Richard Arthur Coombs, age 97, of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at his residence. He was born October 25, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Arthur Coombs.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Coombs was preceded in death by his beloved wife, best friend, and the love of his life for more than 50 years, Margaretta Coombs.

Arthur devoted a significant portion of his adult life to serving his country. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as a medic, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his Air Force service, he continued his military career in the United States Army, serving several more years with honor and dedication.

Following his military retirement, Arthur pursued higher education and graduated with a bachelor's degree in microbiology. He went on to build a meaningful career with the Centers for Disease Control, where his knowledge and commitment helped support the wellbeing of others.

Arthur was a man who found joy in life's simple and lasting treasures. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, but his greatest happiness came from being with his family. Time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild was what he cherished most, and his love for them was steady, faithful, and unmistakable.

He is survived by his son, Craig Coombs of Dalton, GA; daughter, Joyce Coombs of Corryton, TN; granddaughter, Kathrynn (Jake) Fox of Cary, NC; grandson, Ryan Coombs of Dalton, GA; and great-grandson, Brady Fox of Cary, NC.

In keeping with Arthur's wishes, he will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Ponders Melrose Chapel, 138 Melrose Drive, Dalton, GA 30721.
