Jentry McCombs Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home - Columbia on Jan. 21, 2026.
Jentry David McCombs, professionally known as "Jamin JD", and CEO of Whirlwind Productions was born December 16, 1957, in Washington, DC, the beloved son of the late Beatrice and Emory McCombs. Jentry transitioned peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026 at PRISMA Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.

Jentry attended the public schools of Washington D.C. and finished Job Corps trade school in 1977 as an electrician.

At an early age Jentry took on his love for the flute, because his grandfather, who worked for a music store, would often bring home plastic flutes influencing him to play. Early on Jentry played for several school choirs, while continuing his education.

While in trade school he was introduced to a great friend who introduced him to Jazz. This friendship led to a mutual friend giving him a "concert flute". After hard work and practice, Jentry was immediately accepted into the "Caution" Band of Job Corps, the rival band to Job Corp's #1 band " JC Express".

Later on Jentry met several other musician friends and he wrote lots of music of his own and even formed his own band "Theory Funk"; however due to many obstacles the band was discontinued.

Jentry landed many professional appearances as a musician overtime, in 1991 appearing at the Show Time at the Apollo and winning second runner up performing the hit single "Ain't No Sunshine". Jentry was known as one of the best street musical performers of Washington D.C, the American Smithsonian was one of his most lucrative spots. In 2007, Jentry went on to pursue his music career In Denver, Colorado where he made a great name for himself in the famous town of "Lodo" Colorado.

Jentry accepted Christ at an early age and served as Deacon, as well as played as musician for several churches.

In 2025, Jentry moved down South to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He will truly be missed by all those who loved and knew him.

Jentry was preceded in death by his father, Emory McCombs; his mother, Beatrice McCombs; his maternal grandmother, Sadie O. Williams; his maternal grandfather, Leon Williams; his brother, Emory McCombs, Jr., and his sister, Princella Carter.

He leaves memories to be cherished to his two children: a loving son, Jentry McCombs, Jr., and caring daughter, Latasha Coleman; six grandchildren, Destiny McCombs, Jentry McCombs, III, JayQuan McCombs, LaCardo Coleman, Zaria McCombs, and Ja'Nyah McCombs; one great grand, Nav`ea Bowman; two devoted sisters, Althea McCombs, and Leandra Cooke of Washington DC and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and fans who will all miss him.
