Jerald Nelson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Mar. 27, 2026.
Jerald "Jerry" John Nelson was born February 18, 1937 in Harlan, Iowa. Jerry was the third child, and only boy of his parents Marshall and Edith Nelson. Jerry graduated from high school, earning a vocal letter along the way. Upon graduating, Jerry spent two years at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.

Jerry became a teller at People's Bank in Waterloo, Iowa. Jerry spent some time working at Wayne Feeds and finally settled into a career with Squealer Feeds. He had many opportunities with Squealer Feeds, in Harlan, Paulina, Red Oak, and finally Grimes, Iowa. Jerry moved with his wife Janet and three children from Red Oak to Urbandale in 1969.

Jerry was a golfer, bowler, and fisherman for all. He had a deep bass singing voice that he used his entire life. He sang in high school, in several church choirs, and for 25 years with the Good New Five quintet, ministering the gospel to many. After retiring, Jerry became an expert gardener, providing food for his growing family. He especially loved to grow jalapeno peppers and other spices. Jerry created his own cajun seasoning that was the perfect complement to many dishes.

Jerry met his love, Janet, on a blind date. Jerry and Janet married in June of 1959. The two of them were blessed to be married for 66 years and have three children, Ken, Dan, and Beth. Jerry enjoyed traveling with his family to Branson and Leech Lake, where they visited his parents.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Janet; sisters Judy McConkie and Nancy Johnson; and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his three children, Ken (Nancy) Nelson, Dan (Angie) Nelson, and Beth (Gary) Garton; three grandchildren, Anne Nelson, John Nelson, and Zach Garton; one nephew and several nieces.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00am on Thursday, March 26, at New Hope Assembly of God. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am, with a luncheon to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials gifts can be made to New Hope Assembly of God Church in Urbandale.

Jerry and Janet were very kind people. Always had a smile to greet you with. Condolences to the family. No doubt in my mind they are with the Lord and would hope all who knew them would be there with them some day!

I have one of the Good News Five CD's that I take with me on road trips back and forth to Florida. Last spring I had a Christian couple ride home with me. We had so much fun singing along enthusiastically to the familiar songs... And familiar voices!
I loved your parents. Our families go back to when you 1st moved to Des Moines and we went to Westover Baptist Church together 57 years ago! With heart felt sympathy,
Kim Hiscox, Kirby, Abe and Jeff.

Katie and I enjoyed knowing Jerry and Janet so much. They would often stop and talk to us as they were cruising the neighborhood. They will be missed by so many people. May the family take great comfort in the power and love of Jesus.

I met Jerry and all but one of the Good News Five when New Hope started and 4 of the five joined our first choir! What a boost to a small choir! I could always count on Jerry to end a song with a slide to a low note! He was always so encouraging and willing to do anything asked of him. New Hope will miss him, especially the choir.
