Jeremiah “Jere” McCarthy, age 76, of Avondale, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 18,2026, at Wilmington VA Medical Center in Wilmington, DE. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was ason of the late Frederick P. McCarthy Sr. and Catherine (Keller) McCarthy.
Jere was a charismatic man who was known to say that he “never had a bad day in his life.”
He had the life experience of what, many have commented, was more like five lifetimes. He was very talented in so many ways and never turned down an opportunity. This was evidenced by his many careers not limited to a police officer, a volunteer fireman (where he delivered many babies in the back of an ambulance), a salesman, a business owner, and SVP of Helmsley Spear, Inc. to name a few. He even ran for Mayor of Kennett Square upon his return from Vietnam. However, his favorite role was being a father and a grandfather, and he will be profoundly missed.
Jere is survived by his children Dr. Katie McCarthy (Michael Lee) and Fred McCarthy (Jackie); his grandchildren, Ella, Catherine “CC,” Madison, Anne, Joshua, Kennedy, Catherine “Kitty,” Francie, and Freddie Jr.; and by seven of his twelve siblings, Jeanne, Freddie, Pat, Albert, Kevin, Mary, and Jim. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sons, Baby Jeremiah McCarthy and Jeremiah McCarthy Jr.; and by his siblings, K.C., Justin, Michael, and Joe.
