Jerome "Jerry" Obuchowski, 82, of Blue Island, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025.
Jerry was born in Chicago to John and Clara (née Swisk) Obuchowski. After proudly serving in the United States Army, he settled in Blue Island, where he built a life rooted in family and hard work. He spent most of his career in the laboratory at St. Francis Hospital and St. James Hospital, a job he valued deeply and took great pride in.
A lifelong sports fan, Jerry loved cheering on the Cubs, Blackhawks, Illini football and his kids' and grandkids' teams, always quick with a comment on the game or prognosis for the season. Umpires and refs didn't stand a chance with Jerry around.
Family was at the heart of everything Jerry did. He was the first to arrive at every gathering (always early, so he wouldn't miss out) and often the last to leave. He loved being surrounded by his people, whether it was a holiday party, a backyard cookout, or simply time spent talking and laughing. He was always there-for school concerts, sporting events, graduations, moves into dorms and first homes. He showed up with pride and support (and cookies from Iversen's) in every stage of life.
His thoughtfulness showed in countless ways, from his hand-painted Christmas village and deliveries of treats on Paczki Day to his steady presence that made every family celebration feel complete. Everyone loved Jerry.
He volunteered throughout his life, whether at his kids' schools or in his community, always finding purpose in helping others. He was also a proud member of the American Legion, where he cherished the camaraderie of fellow veterans and took part in events that honored and supported those who served.
Jerry is survived by his children: Pamela (Mark) Bandzi, Susan (Jordan) Szafranski, Kristy (Nathan) Wallen, Sherri (Mark) Obuchowski, and Andrew (Claire) Obuchowski; his grandchildren: Matthew, Sean, Luke, Corey, Jacob, Jackson, Lily, Olivia, Owen, Caleb, Ava, Summer, Hope, and Rylee who lovingly called him Dziadzia, his great-grandson Elliott, and his sister Jane. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn (née Podbielski), his brother Donald Obuchowski, and his parents.
Those who knew Jerry will remember his devotion to family, his loyalty, his humor, his smile, and his joy in the simple moments-watching a game, sharing a sweet treat, or just being together. His presence will be deeply missed, but his love and spirit will live on in every gathering, every celebration, and every cheer for the home team.
Visitation for Jerry will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 Greenwood Ave., Blue Island. Chapel prayers will begin Tuesday at 9:15 am at the Krueger Funeral Home, then to St. Benedict Church/St. Mary Magdalene Parish, 2339 York St., Blue Island for mass at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City. If you would like to contribute in Jerry's memory, donations can be made to the American Legion.
