Jerome Jeremiah Tangney

Jerome Jeremiah Tangney, age 89, of Menasha, Wisconsin, passed away on May 31, 2025. Born on June 26, 1935, in Wisconsin Dells, Jerome lived a life marked by compassion, faith, and a love for his family and community.

A graduate of Deerfield High School in 1954, Jerome went on to double major in philosophy and sociology from Marquette University. He began his career as a social worker in Outagamie County, later spending 25 years working for the City of Menasha as a bridge tender on the Racine Street Bridge, where he became a familiar and friendly face.

On August 20, 1966, Jerome married Nancy Joan Hanson, and together they made a home and raised a family on Doty Island in Menasha, where they lived for 40 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished time spent with his family—especially playing board games, spending time at Smith Park, and working with tools.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, reading, supporting the Packers, and connecting with others. He loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting and school events, always cheering the loudest. Known for his storytelling and warm personality, Jerome never met a stranger and brought joy to those around him.

Jerome was a man of strong Catholic faith. He was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Parish, where he attended Mass weekly wearing his suit and served as a greeter. He also spent time in prayer at the Twin Cities Adoration Chapel and volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.

Jerome is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; his children, Anita (Wally) Thomson and Bruce (Darcie) Tangney; his grandchildren, Nikki Tangney, Paul (Shawnna) Thomson, and Ben (Coral) Thomson; and his great-grandchildren, Talia, Walter, Evelyn, Arthur, and Millie; and siblings, Cathie Duerst-Schroeder, Patrick Tangney, Bernard Jr (Linda) Tangney, Francis (Alice) Tangney, Bill Tangney and Jim Bauer.

Jerome is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Sr and Margaret Tangney; parents-in-law, Olaf and Clara Hanson; sister, Alice Leszcyzski; and siblings-in-law, Dan Leszczyski, Ed Duerst, Joe Schroeder, and Phyllis Tangney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Menasha on Tuesday, June 17th. Visitation will take place from 9:30 – 11:00 AM with mass beginning at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry or St Mary’s Church.
