My life changed dramatically when I showed up in Gainesville and Dr. Butler agreed to have me as a Master's student, and then as a doctoral student. His contribution to developing military entomologists in all three services was outstanding. His innovations were at times quirky (e.g., for those who remember looking for soft ticks) but opened up our minds to thinking outside the box. I have so many fond memories of working in "Butler's Lab" down by Shands Hospital as a teaching/research assistant during my graduate student journey and of all the other colleagues who past through there.

I knew Mr. Butler for over 52 years. First as my friend´s dad and neighbor and for the last 22 years as my neighbor when I moved back to my childhood neighborhood. He was always generous and friendly giving my children gifts when they were young. He was a wonderful host. We were blessed to live so close and be invited to his house for neighborhood parties.
He raised 2 wonderful children in Kelly and Scott. He was the best neighbor.

So sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. We have such fond memories of singing in choir with him at Grace many many years ago. He was such a kind, talented and very intelligent man! He will be missed! Karin and Lee Marsh
