'You Could Count on Him'
Among the potential dangers of hanging out with Jerry DeVito were that you would laugh a lot and find yourself blown away by his mastery of sports trivia. And one other thing: you might have gotten fat.

Mr. DeVito, 66, loved to take care of people around him, especially when it came to making sure that they were fed. He was the personal driver for David Alger, the chief executive of Fred Alger Management. When not behind the wheel, Mr. DeVito spent his days at the firm, spending time with traders and looking out for the welfare of interns, particularly making sure they knew there was leftover food from a conference or luncheon.

"He even used the interoffice mail system to send doughnuts to our New Jersey site," said Christopher W. Cheever, a former summer intern.

A native of the Bronx and a great baseball player in his younger days, Mr. DeVito was a die-hard Yankees fan, who used to joke with the Alger brothers that they should buy the Bronx Bombers and make him the team's general manager. A father of two, he planned to retire this year, though he would have missed being in the mix. "He just liked being around people," said his daughter, Robyn Goldstein. "No matter what age you were, young or old, you could count on him."

I do not know Jerry personally but on one of visits to NYC, I stopped by the memorial like I usually do. I took a picture and 2 months later I looked back at that photo and his name stood out. I started looking up his name and I loved hearing and learning about him. I feel honored that his name was in the spot that I took that picture. I learned a little about him and his life. Long live you Jerry, you will never be forgotten and LETS GO YANKEES

Remembering Jerry on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Scott Moresh

June 16, 2014

Robyn/Todd,
This is your cousin Scott Moresh. I just found this site. I visited the WTC memorial back in the summer of 2012, and I saw your father's name on it. My dad always said good things about Jerry and talked about the good ol' days and Yankees games and such. I'm sorry for the loss of your mother, and it's tragic that her and my dad died within exactly 1 month of each other, life's strange like that. I'm the last of the Moresh clan on the male side, so I'm easy to find, I'd love to chat sometime. I finally have a picture/face to your father's name which is neat for me. I hope things are going well with both of you.

I have just found this news about Jerry. It has brought me to tears. Long ago, in elementary school, I had the biggest crush on Jerry. We were too young to date, and it might have been a one-way crush - but he has always been part of my history. It grieves me to hear of his untimely death. I'm sure he brought much joy into the world. I send my condolences to his family, from someone who knew Jerry as a child, and never forgot him. May God heal and bless you all.

It is now seven years since that horrible day when the world, and my llife as I knew it, changed forever. Words can not describe the pain and loss I felt.
I have not written before but have visited the site. My father will always be in my heart and it makes me so happy to know that so many people knew what a great guy he was. Your entries bring me to tears. Thank you for remembering and honoring the special man he was.
Daddy I think of you every single day and I miss you more than I can say.

Uncle Jerry,
Not just a great uncle but a great guy. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He always looked like a young guy. I always remember our babseball talks. We had many good times together. I remember the 1977 Playoffs and Chambliss's homer. You called it before it happened.

I did not know Jerry. I worked with someone who was close to him. I was thinking of him and my co-worker on this day. My thoughts are with those who knew him and loved him, especially today on the 1st anniversary.

On my last day of work as an intern last summer at Fred Alger, Jerry gave me a reproduction of one of his prized possessions: his own torn ticket stub from the Lou Gehrig Memorial Game on July 4, 1941 at Yankee Standium. I believe he kept the original on his person all the time, so it was lost with him. I'll always hold on to my copy, to remind myself of Jerry, the incredibly warm hearted person whom I knew only briefly. What a guy he was.

Hi Jerry:

Just a great guy. What else can I say. I knew your for 15 years. One of Dolores' first tasks, when she worked for Fred, was to hire a new driver. Dolores could size up someone within 30 seconds and well what can I say, she hired you. I know things weren't always easy for you, but you were not a quiter. You were first class and you always found the time to talk to me when ever I came up to the office or if I met you on the street. I miss you dear friend and I hope you are at peace. My God bless your soul and your family.

I CERTAINLY CAN NEVER FORGET WORKING WITH JERRY AT ALGER. JERRY WAS A GREAT STORY TELLER AND I LOVED HIS STORIES OF HIS TIME SPENT AS A YOUNG MAN WORKING AT A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE STUDIO AND HIS EXPERIENCES WHEN HE HAD A CIGAR SHOP IN MANHATTAN. THERE WAS A RETIREMENT PARTY IN THE OFFICE FOR HIM AND WHILE HE NEVER DID RETIRE, IT WAS AMAZING TO SEE THAT EVERY ALGER PERSON MADE IT A POINT TO SEE THAT THEY ATTENDED THIS EVENT. I ALSO HAVE MY OWN WAY OF KNOWING THAT JERRY IS STILL WATCHING OVER US JUST LIKE HE ALWAYS DID. MISS YOU BUDDY, DAVID

Jerry helped me get through some pretty rough times at the office. There were days when I thought I would just lose it. Then Jerry would call and everything would be ok. He would make me laugh and remind me of what was important. Thank you Jerry. You will be forever remembered in my heart.

May Jerry's dependability, his laughter, life and love live on in those who have been touched by his life. We are very sorry for your loss of Jerry. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I never knew Jerry. I picked his name at random at my church and I prayed a rosary for Jerry. It was the first I prayed the rosary in decades. Although I lost several friends in the towers on Sept 11, it was Jerry that got me to pray my first rosary in a long time. I prayed it on the train on my way into the city and it helped me. I hope it helped Jerry and his family too. Thank you Jerry. Peace!

Jerry was a good friend & co-worker. He always had a smile & always concern about others. Every Tuesday it was donut day. Whenever they came in he would always make sure that everyone knew & would let everyone know that "the donuts are here". He always spoke about his family with love & pride in his voice. He will be missed. I pray for him & his family during this difficult time. Rest in peace.
