Jerry Hyland, 93, passed away at his home in Indianapolis on March 31, 2025. He was born to William and Irene (Schmitt) Hyland on September 1, 1931. His father, at the time of his sudden death on September 25, 1941, was Evansville Chief of Police. His mother was the daughter of Edward Schmitt, who served for many years on Evansville’s City Council.

Jerry graduated from Central High School (Evansville) in 1949 and then joined the US Naval Reserve 1951-1955, including active-duty service during the Korean War from 1952-1954.

Jerry graduated with a BSEE from Purdue University in 1957, with honors from Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi. He received a JD from Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington in 1960. Jerry truly enjoyed his career as an intellectual property attorney and partner at Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis. After law school, Jerry married his beautiful wife Sue, and they spent more than five decades together, raising three children and enjoying time with friends and family.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sue, his eldest daughter Julia, his aunt Eunice Schmitt, and his sister Lois Hyland. He is survived by his son Joe (Steph), daughter Jill, grandsons Ari, Samuel (Kara), James, Andrew, Benjamin, and Sam, plus cousins, extended family, and friends.

Jerry loved warm weather, music of many genres, football, basketball, and fantastic food. He enjoyed vacationing in Florida in the winters, and Michigan in the summers. He was a formidable opponent in trivia games and liked discussing court cases and current events in the news.

Our dad Jerry was intelligent, witty, charming, patient, and incredibly strong. His strength didn’t come from being boisterous or commanding. His strength came from patience, kindness, perseverance and unwavering commitment. His influence was not so much a product of what he said, but of his example of inner strength. In addition to that strength, Dad taught us empathy, generosity, and most of all love. He never missed an opportunity to tell us that he loved us, and we always knew that we meant the world to him.

One of his favorite ways to say goodbye with a smile was “I’m so glad that you got to see me.” Dad, we are eternally so glad that we got to see you. You will be missed every single day.

Visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan - Broad Ripple on Saturday June 7th from 12-2, followed by a memorial and burial.
