At 3:22 a.m. on January 29, at the age of 48, Jerry Francis Lalor passed away. He leaves behind his greatest joys, Quinn and Aaron-two beautiful boys who were the center of his world.
Born and raised in Iowa City, Jerry was endlessly energetic and deeply connected to his community. Even as a child, he could be found riding his bike across town, meeting new people, and seeking out adventure. There was always something calling to him-people to talk to, places to explore. He swam daily at City Park Pool, worked at Gramma's, and rode across campus from Kinnick to home at sunset. He delighted in discovering new staircases at the North Ramp and IMU. Hickory Hill Park was his playground; he knew its trails and deer paths long before they became familiar routes to others.
Jerry's love of music began early, turning pages for the organist at St. Mary's. From there, he became a longtime member of the St. Mary's Choir. As his voice matured, he shared solos, served as cantor, and offered his faith through song.
With the encouragement of his parents, Jerry found the confidence to attend the All-State Band Camp at the University of Iowa-a two week experience that sparked friendships lasting nearly 35 years. That passion led him to leadership roles as band manager for City High Bands, Jazz Band, and 4th Ave. After graduating from City High, he earned a coveted spot in the Notre Dame Marching Band at just 17. He was always humbled to be chosen-70 trumpets competing for 50 positions-and though he never claimed to be the best player, he always knew what was expected and gave his all.
After a nontraditional break from music, Jerry returned as a lead voice in the Old Capitol Barbershop Chorus. Under the direction of Jim, Larry, Scott, and John, the group rose to become Central States Champions-an achievement he cherished.
Jerry later joined the Newman Singers, a turning point that grounded him. As a front man of sorts, he spent five years performing in 15 states, lifting his voice alongside thousands in praise.
In 1998, while working at Radio Shack, a friend encouraged him to channel his energy into radio. He applied for an on air position at 100.7 The Fox, launching a career that spanned nearly 18 years-full of growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments.
Education remained a dream Jerry refused to let go of. After long days on the air, he attended classes at Kirkwood, working tirelessly to earn his AA with honors. That accomplishment paved the way for him to become a multi generational graduate of the University of Iowa. After four years in the Hawkeye Marching Band, Jerry proudly graduated at age 38. He did it.
In 2009, Jerry discovered a new passion through robotics competitions. As an emcee, game announcer, and all around supporter, he helped grow STEM opportunities across Iowa and around the world. His work took him to states across the country and to England, Dubai, and Geneva. He loved the students, the energy, and the mission-and he poured himself into it.
Jerry is survived by his children, Quinn and Aaron; his loving, patient, and caring father, Frank; his siblings-Lisa (Jay) Johnston, and their son Nile, Christie Lalor, Rich Lalor, Jenny (Mathew) Leyser, and their children Bailey, Lily, and Owen; and his former wife and friend, Kayla Sanders.
Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette Lalor.
