My heartfelt condolences to the family of Jerry Leiber, as well as to the friends who loved him. Deepest sympathies to Mike Stoller, his friend and partner for 60+ years. I have never met either of these gentlemen, but the Leiber/Stoller team was responsible for writing and/or producing so many of the recordings I grew up with, and their music is such an indelible part of life, that I feel as though I know them personally. Jerry Leiber has left behind a legacy that will outlive all of us, and the world is a richer place for his having been here. My thoughts are with the Leiber and Stoller families in their time of loss. Rest in peace, Mr. Leiber, and thank you.

I started working for Jerry and Mike when I was 18 years old, (and Jerry was 29),when their secretary Faith offered what started out as a part-time job to me. I worked for them before and through the start-up and sale of RedBird and BlueCat records, the George Goldner days. Jerry was a genuine character, interested in so much more than the fantastic rock and roll he and Mike wrote. I have never stopped thinking of myself as the luckiest person I know to have worked in such an incredible place, at such an incredible time, with such incredible peope, and at such a young age. Through the work association with his son, Jed, I had the rare opportunity to meet Mr Leiber, who was and always will be an inspiration to me. That one blue eye and one brown eye with his remarkable poise, he only encouraged my singing, to keep at it no matter what and to believe in my talent. I will be forever grateful to his equally talented son Jed who carries on the legacy, that I had the privilege to work with. God bless you Mr Leiber and thank you for the beauty you left on earth and to the music industry.

I had all those old 45s and when my kids were little, they used to play them over and over again. They loved them just as much as I did. Long live Rock and Roll! And may Jerry Leiber RIP. I did not realize he was the one who with Stoller wrote all those great dance tunes. I really loved "Stand By Me" too.

August 23, 2011

Having the music Jerry wrote made my high school years much more bearable. My first dance with that special girl was Smokey Joe's Cafe. My deepest condolence. John D from KC

Starting with my first purchase of Elvis's "Hound dog" in 1956, when I was nine years old, I began noticing the "Lieber-Stoller" credits on so many of my 45's. Lieber-Stoller were a major influence on my wanting to be a songwriter and, although I never pursued a full-time songwriting career, to this day I still compose for fun and profit, and consider Jerry Lieber to be the epitome of a lyricist. He was clever, funny, and witty, yet always tasteful. I loved the "Smokey Joe's Cafe" revue. Jerry, thank you for the wonderful body of work you have given us, and may you rest in peace.

The talent just spilled out of the Brill Building in NYC, where Jerry Leiber held forth with his writing partner Mike Stoller...so many, Bacharach, Paul Simon, Carole King, who, incidentally, co-wrote the very best Drifters song, "Some Kind of Wonderful", a love poem set to a cha cha beat here in Baltimore. Thank you Mr. Leiber for penning all of those tunes of our times. Peace up there.

SO SILENT WAS YOUR LEAVING
by Robert M. H. Zirbel

So silent was your leaving,
Not a sound to say goodbye,
Just a silence that you left behind
And that silence seemed to say
“Please, please…
Do not grieve…
For I just had to go.”

So silent was your leaving,
Uttering not a painful cry
Nor even a fearful moan.
And that silence seemed to say
“Please, please…
Do not grieve…
For I just had to go.”

That silence is still not shattered
Even though my tears pour down
To join with all the unsaid words…
Those special, special words…
That I had always meant to say.

If I had cried out “Please, please don’t go.”
Would you have stayed?
No, I think not
For you had been called…
And you knew you had to go.
Yes, you knew you had to go.

You inspired me to write a short story after you and Stoller wrote "Little Egypt" and I handed it to one of the Coasters a few years ago here in Las Vegas and he loved it. I met one of the new Coasters here Saturday and we talked about your talents for music. God Bless You!!
