Jerry P. Puckett, 84, of Mize, Mississippi died December 12, 2023. He was born November 7, 1939, in White Oak, Mississippi to Robert Pucket and Maude Meadow Pucket. Jerry attended Pearl High School and Hinds Jr. College before taking a bus to L.A. to replace Glen Campbell in the Champs of "Tequila" fame. He was a session musician at Malaco Records where he played guitar on Paul Simon's Rhyming Simon album. He also played on "Groove Me" by King Floyd and "Mr. Big Stuff" by Jean Knight. He was a guest artist on Willie Nelson's Remember Me album. Recently he recorded a jazz album for Malaco called Just in Time. He is survived by his wife Anna, his daughter Julie Puckett, and a grandson Peyton Fowler. The family is planning on having a private service.

My first meeting Jerry was when he played with the Red Counts band many years ago. My brother, Bubba Jordan was the singer. I loved to hear Jerry play. What a talent. God bless. David Jordan

I have to echo the exact words of my friend, Bucky Barrett! He was a musical genius, and a wonderful human being! He was very well rounded from fishing, Motorcycles, And constant hobbies. My deepest condolences to Anna, Julie, Peyton and family.
Like Bucky said, Jerry was always a great inspiration to me as well. He was my first true teacher and mentor in studio production, and I never questioned his hearing and attention to detail. Playing live with him was always a blast. He had a great sense of humor and radiated joy in his music. Without necessarily being schooled in notation, he had innate perfect pitch and could play guitar or piano as well as anyone. Period. On top of that he had a very smooth voice, always with a soulful delivery. But what Jerry would want everyone to know more than anything was that he loved Jesus Christ and was devoted in his Christian walk. Thank you Jerry, claim your reward in heaven with our Lord.

Jerry was such an inspiration to me.
I took some lessons from him in the early 60s and he was a GUITAR GURU GENIUS . He did indeed go out to California and play with the Champs and came back to Mississippi and showed me some of those Great guitar licks. Some of the things he showed me back then, I still use today. He was way ahead of his time in Mississippi. The guitar Jerry is holding in the photo of him used to be my guitar. I sold it to him in 1964. He made it sound better than I ever could. Not only could Jerry play the guitar, he played keyboards and of course Bass and don´t let me forget that he was one fantastic singer! I always looked up to him. May you rest in peace my friend and GUITAR GURU GENIUS.
