Jerry Stephenson Obituary

Visit the Memorial Redwood Mortuary & Cemetery - West Jordan website to view the full obituary.

Jerry Don Stephenson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, collector of coins, teller of jokes, champion of costume parties, and the self-proclaimed “World’s Best Santa”- rapped up his earthly adventure on August 10, 2025, in West Jordan, Utah, at the age of 90.

He was born on July 31, 1935, in Memphis, Texas, to James Clinton Stephenson and Nonnie Vowell. Jerru grew up learning the value of hard work, the joy of laughter, and the importance of a good story (and maybe a tall tale or two). On January 2, 1965, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Benson. In 1992, they made it official for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.

Jerry never met a stranger, only friends he hadn’t made yet. He loved to travel with Bonnie, spend time with family, and make people laugh until their sides hurt. Whether it was collecting coins, riding motorcycles (and winning trophies for it), or dressing up as Santa and convincing every kid in town that they were on the “nice” list, Jerry knew how to bring joy.

His faith was the cornerstone of his life. He served in many callings in his LDS wards, but his all-time favorite was serving as one of the Priesthood members at Girls Camp each year. The girls loved him, and not just because he usually had a stash of treats.

Jerry is survived by Bonnie, his partner in all things; daughter Christine Mendel (Ralph); sister Sue Doss (Paul); grandchildren Josh Mendel, Spenser Mendel (Amanda), Nichole Murray (Shane); and great-grandchildren Bryson, Bryler, Brenlee, Chloe, Aida, Stetson, Tracen, Lakelynn, and Paitynn. He is now reunited in heaven with his parents, brothers Joe, Tommy, and Bob, and surely a few old motorcycles.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah. Funeral services will be on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the LDS Church, 5180 West 4700 South, West Valley City, Utah, with a viewing from 10:00 to 10:45 AM. Interment following services at Memorial Redwood Cemetery, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah.

In true Jerry fashion, the family invites everyone to wear a cowboy hat to the service; if you’ve got one, the bigger the brim, the better. He’d think it was perfect.

The family would like to thank Rocky Mountain Hospice for the kindness and care they gave Jerry, with special thanks to his nurse Rachel, CNA Martha, and the whole team who kept him comfortable and smiling until the very end.
