Jerrye Edwards Mayhew

Jerrye Edwards Mayhew, 88, passed away on August 15, 2025. She was born in Danville, VA, to Glennon C. Edwards and Catherine M. Edwards on July 11, 1937.

Jerrye was a graduate of Longwood University, where she received a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi (an honorary education society), Beorc Eh Thorn (an honorary English society), and had many other activities. She also played basketball. Jerrye was among 12 honor graduates at the 1959 graduation exercise.

After College, she married Jessie W. Mayhew Jr (Sonny) in December 1958. They moved to Alabama, where she taught in the Anniston City School system for two years. Returning to Danville, she taught Elementary English and Preschool. She was a director and very active with the Danville Speech and Hearing Clinic. Jerrye loved golf, bridge, gardening, and travel, but most of all her family. She was kind, cheerful, and helpful to all who knew her.

Jerrye is predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Calvin Edwards.

She is survived by her loving husband, Sonny of 67 years; two sons, Jessie W. Mayhew III, Charles C. Mayhew; and her brother, Charles M. Edwards. She had four grandchildren, Tyler, Elizabeth Trujillo [AJ], Rebecca, and Charles Jr. During her decline in health, Sonny was always at her side.

A private family service was held.
