Jess Scott Alley, 76, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, in Prague, Oklahoma. Born on October 5, 1948, in Stroud, Oklahoma, Jess grew up in Stroud and attended Stroud Public Schools. He was the son of Leonard John Cushing and Martha Jane (Alley) Cushing.

Independent and determined from a young age, Jess set out on his own at 18 and charted a life of hard work, grit, and quiet kindness. He proudly served two years in the United States Army, working in communications while stationed in Germany. A talented athlete, he boxed as a young man and later shared his experience with others as the manager of a training gym.

Jess found his lifelong calling with horses. He began his career training quarter horses and spent most of his life with thoroughbreds, building a respected reputation on racing circuits across the East Coast. He made his home for many years in Ruidoso, New Mexico, where his steady hands and patient spirit earned him a “horse whisperer” reputation. He loved all animals, but horses were his heart—and he inspired his brothers to enter the world of horse racing, even serving briefly as a jockey agent for his brother, John.

Gentle, caring, and loyal, Jess returned to Oklahoma a few months ago to be closer to family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Joseph “Joey” Cushing and John Cushing. Those left to cherish his memory include his sisters, Jane Place and her husband, Randy, and Jennifer Sweatt and her husband, Bryan; his aunt, Marilyn Brown; and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends who will remember his easy smile, soft-spoken wisdom, and deep love for the animals in his care.
