Deacon Jesse Barr, son of the late Deacon Ezell and Rosa Edwards Barr was born on August 18, 1948 in Lexington County, South Carolina. After being a blessing to many for 77 years, he was called home on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
At an early age, Deacon Barr joined and was baptized at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1995. He served faithfully as Co-Chairman of the Deacon Board. He also served on the Trustee Board, Advisor of the Youth Choir, Advisor of the Sunday School Ministry, Advisor of the Brotherhood Ministry, Advisor of the Finance Committee, Pastor Anniversary Committee, Vice Chairperson of the Deaconess, and Chairman of the Kitchen Committee.
In 1966, Jesse graduated from Twin City High School where he excelled in Football.
In 1968, he married Shirley Williams Barr. To this union, four children were born: James, Jessica, Angela and Jacqueline.
In 1968, Jesse was drafted into the Army. Jesse attended AIT at Fort Gordon. There he was awarded "Outstanding Trainee", High Marksman M14 Rifle, and High Score PCPT. Jesse served in the Vietnam War in 1969. Jesse was awarded the "Purple Heart". Jesse was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. Jesse served his country faithfully and was a proud Veteran.
Sports was Deacon Jesse's passion. Jesse was a dedicated member of the Golden Eagles Baseball team. He would love to tell people he had more home runs than anyone else in Batesburg-Leesville. Jesse was a dedicated coach for Brodie Road Little League Football for 10 years where he inspired the lives of many young boys.
In 2013, Jesse retired after many years of service from Hartwell Industries. Jesse also worked with Lexington District 3 in the Afterschool program where he touched the lives of many young kids.
Deacon Jesse was preceded in death by a son, James Barr; sisters, Myra Barr Meachem, Annie Edwards McDaniel, Joan Edwards Scott; a special aunt who was instrumental in his up-bringing, Evelyn "Ma-Ma" Baskett, and a very special uncle, Milas Barr.
Those left to celebrate his home-going are: a loving and devoted wife for 56 years, Shirley W. Barr of the home; three loving daughters, Jessica Barr-Dennis, Angela Barr (Travis) Williams and Jacqueline Barr; grandchildren, Jaewan Williams, Darius Dennis, Jamiyah Barr-Williams, Jahmad Barr-Williams, Dyani Dennis, Dana Dennis and Journee' Williams; one sister, Marilyn (Josh) Williams; four brothers, Lowman (Jennifer) Edwards, Charlie (Brenda) Edwards, Joe (Eva) Barr and Jerome Edwards; three sisters-in-law; Brenda (Phillip) Williams, Patricia Allen and Gloria Jones and a foster sibling, Jackie (Lori) Evans of Columbus, Georgia; an aunt-in-law, Joyce Williams of Maryland; he was a nurturing father to Johnetta Meachem. He was a nurturing grandfather to Cameron Peterson, Breshon Jones, Stevee Jones and Suraya Jones. Deacon Barr also leaves a host (too many to name) of sorrowing loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
