Jesse Eugene Carnes Sr.

Jesse Eugene Carnes, Sr., 93, of Norfolk, VA, passed away July 17, 2012, in Virginia Beach, VA. Jesse was born in Newnan, GA on May 8, 1919, the son of Lizzie Alma and John B. Carnes and was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Carnes; and sisters, Sarah Cash, Bessie Smith, Johnnie May Tatum, Nellie Payton, Virginia Carnes and Esther Driver. He left home to join the Navy in 1941, that brought him to Norfolk, VA where he stayed to become a member of Colonial Heights Church of Christ, worked and raised his family. Discharged from the Navy he moved to the Naval Air Station Norfolk as an innovative aircraft engine mechanic for 32 years. Jesse was a passionate fisherman and hunter who spent much of his retirement with family and friends. His wife of 66 years, Mabel preceded him in death and he is survived by four children, Eugene Carnes and Helen Browning, Christine Carnes, Kathy and Von Freudenberg, Thomas and Kathy Carnes; six grandchildren, Kevin, Hunter, Tanner and Parker Carnes, Clair and Alexandria Freudenberg; two great-grandchildren, Kraig and Tyler Carnes; and a host of friends. A funeral service with military honors will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. The burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
