Mr. Jessie Steve Moore, 79, of
Concord, North Carolina, passed away peacefully with his family by his
side at the Tucker Hospice House on June 24, 2023, following a brave and courageous battle with
cholangiocarcinoma.
Born on November 16, 1943, he was the son of the late Jesse Claiborn Moore and Mary Mays Moore
of
Augusta, Georgia. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years,
Iolanda "Lolly" Conte Moore; a son, Jimmie Dean Cromer; a great grandson, Daylan Radford; and
two brothers, Millard Moore and William Moore.
Jessie was born in
Augusta, Georgia, and known to his loving family and friends as "Stevie." He went
to Richmond County High School and was an avid athlete and excelled in baseball and football. He
had a love of sports all of his life especially baseball and Nascar.
Jessie was a true American patriot and had a great love for his country. He enlisted in the United States
Air Force in January 1961 and served until January 1967 receiving an honorable discharge and rank of
E4. He then enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1975 serving until 1977, re-enlisting in 1979 and
serving until 1982. He loved all of the years he served with the 1454th Transportation Company and
was affectionately known as "Radar" to all fellow Guardsmen.
His vocation in life was in the transportation industry beginning with Railway Express of Augusta,
Georgia. He relocated to North Carolina with Railway Express in 1968. He married the love of his
life, Lolly, on March 15, 1969. He then began work with Consolidated Freightways and retired in 1998
and was known by all of his fellow truckers as "Little Jessie." During his retirement years, he took
many jobs involving transportation. He worked for Barbee's Lawn & Garden delivering and picking up
lawnmowers; Eden Gardens Assisted Living Center as a transportation driver delivering elderly
patients to doctor's appointments; and also delivered vehicles for Hendrick Automotive Group. He also
volunteered as an organizer and file keeper for the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer,
NC. In addition, he lovingly volunteered for a nursing home visitation ministry for many years.
Jessie had a great love for children and wrote children's stories throughout his life and had several
books that were published and distributed throughout the years as gifts to children and to various
ministries. Some of the beloved titles are "Day at the Amusement Park" and "The Adventures of Fluffy
and Duffy." He opened the "Family Grocery and Game Room" in the early 1980's because of his love
for teens and his opinion that most kids would stay out of trouble if they had a place to hang out and a
place to belong. He was honored with the "Good Guy of the Week" award by The Tribune, Shoney's of
Concord, and Carolina Mall Cinemas.
Jessie took the commandment of "Love Thy Neighbor" seriously and was the first to greet many in his
beloved neighborhood of Sleepy Hollow. He served as President for many years always helping his
neighbors and taking care of the entrance way until he began caregiving for his wife when her illness
began.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. In his later years, he was
affectionately known as "PawPaw Jessie" to many, never missing a single event that involved his
beloved grandchildren. His love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was evident to all, and his family
was by far the most important part of his life.
