Jie Liang Obituary

Jie is survived by his wife of 32 years, Re-Jin; his daughter, Claire (Yilan); his parents; his sister, Li; as well as his loving extended family.
Jie was born on July 23, 1964 in Chongqing China. He received his Bachelor's degree at Fudan University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
Jie was the Richard and Loan Hill Distinguished Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Director of the Center for Bioinformatics and Quantitative Biology, University Distinguished Professor at University of Illinois of Chicago (UIC) as well as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He pioneered the formation of the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Bioinformatics at UIC, one of the earliest such programs in the nation, which received IBHE approval in 2003.
Jie was an invaluable educator and mentor, devoted to the advancement of science and improving the human condition. Jie dedicated his life to research in the organizing principles of biological phenomena, to designing and engineering methods and systems for detecting important biological signals, and enhancing desired biological functions.
For those who would like to leave a lasting tribute to Jie's life, donations in memory of Jie may be directed to the Cancer Research Institute or the Art Institute of Chicago. For those who would like to send flowers to the services, please contact Westgate Flower & Plant Shop at 708-386-0072.
Jie's funeral services will be held on January 4th, 2024. Guests may visit Jie at any time within the Visitation Window of 8:00 until 10:00 AM at the Zimmerman-Harnett Funeral Home (7319 Madison Street | Forest Park, IL 60130). His Celebration of Life Service will begin at 10:00 AM at Pleasant Home (217 Home Avenue | Oak Park, IL 60302). However, guests are welcome to light refreshments at Pleasant Home starting from 8:30 AM. The Celebration of Life Service will be followed by his 12:30 PM Burial at Forest Home Cemetery (863 Des Plaines Ave | Forest Park, IL 60130).
