Jim Bishop, 81, of Pampa, passed away on June 18, 2023, in Amarillo.

 

Celebration of life services will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Pampa with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor, officiating. A burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Jim was born on November 18th, 1941, in Memphis to Bill and Opal Bishop. As a young boy, he remained in Memphis during his elementary years before his family moved to Muleshoe. Jim later graduated from Muleshoe High School in 1960. Afterwards, he entered the U.S. Army serving honorably before his discharge. Following his service, Jim enrolled at West Texas State University, later graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree.

 

After his graduation from college, Jim started his long and distinguished career in Law Enforcement. Jim became a trooper for the Texas Department of Public Safety. He helped work and police many different towns & counties that included Austin, Midland, Ft. Stockton, Farwell, and Pampa. He later retired from the DPS after 32 years of service and retained the title of Special Ranger.

 

Jim later reacquainted with his college sweetheart, Mona Oneal, and they married on September 28th, 1991, in Pampa.  They shared almost 31 years of marriage before Mona preceded him in death on August 25th, 2022.  Jim was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. Jim was a detailed and disciplined man who took immaculate care of his house, yard, and all of his possessions. He was also an avid reader who loved to read Western books, especially the Louis L'Amour novels. Jim will be missed by his family and friends.

 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, W.A. Bishop, Alvin Bishop, and Benny Bishop.

 

He is survived by three stepsons, Monty Oneal and wife Haleigh of San Angelo, Kyle Oneal and companion Ami of Wichita, KS, and Trent Oneal and wife Tiffany of Amarillo; six step grandchildren, Jaden Oneal and wife Morgan of Friona, Jaxton Oneal of Amarillo, Sean Oneal of Wichita, KS, Paige Oneal of Wichita, KS, Kyler Oneal of San Angelo and Kara Craddick of Fair Play; three step-great-grandchildren, Kameron Oneal of Amarillo, Aria Oneal of Friona, and Khilyn Craddick of Fair Play; two sisters, Helen Inman of El Paso, and Judith Johnson of Ft. Worth; sister-in-law, Vada Bishop, of Mesquite; a brother-in-law, Richard Hunter and wife Sissy of Dimmitt; and by numerous special nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family.
