Our cherished son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor; Jim Fannin passed away peacefully on February 6 after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. Jim was born on June 15, 1956, in
Everett, Washington, to James & Jackie Fannin, and attended Mukilteo schools, graduating from Mariner High School in 1975.
From a young age, Jim was instilled with a love of music that would stay with him forever. He earned a degree in music and education from Central Washington University, where he began shaping the passions and values that would define his life's work.
Jim student taught at West Valley in 1979 and was hired in 1980 as the band teacher. During his time at West Valley Junior High, Jim's energy, positivity, and enthusiasm made band the class to join. Panther Pride Band became something special-something students wanted to be part of. Few who were there will forget watching more than 200 junior high students in shiny gold uniforms march down Yakima Avenue in the Sunfair Parade, turning heads and dropping jaws.
In his early years at West Valley, Jim met the love of his life, Capri Clausen, the JH PE teacher and coach. They married in 1987 and together raised their two children, Taylor (1989) and Parker (1992) in West Valley.
Mr. Fannin was a beloved educator who helped expand the West Valley band program and inspired a love of music, learning, leadership, and community in thousands of students. He was a creator of memories and opportunities, and a champion for kids. He also pioneered the NOVA program alongside his close friend and teaching partner, Laurie Miller.
In 1996, Jim helped open West Valley Middle School as Athletic and Activities Director before becoming Assistant Principal in 2000. In 2012, he became the first Mid-Level Campus Principal, a role he approached with the same determination, commitment, and steady leadership, always putting staff and students first.
Outside of school, Jim found his greatest joy in his family. He loved watching his children on the soccer field and basketball court, spending time at the family cabin on Hood Canal, and traveling with Capri after retirement. Becoming a grandfather was one of his proudest and happiest moments.
Jim was adored by his family and admired by friends, colleagues, and former students. His 37-year career was defined by his deep care for students, he believed in every one of them. He had a remarkable memory, remembering names and the details that mattered long after students left his classroom and building. His influence reached thousands, and his work with staff, families, and educators has left a lasting impact. Jim's legacy is one of compassion, service, and dedication to others.
Through both the joys and the challenges of his life, Jim's faith journey led him to a deep relationship with Jesus Christ. That faith gave him hope for what was to come and a lasting sense of peace for the beloved family he leaves behind.
Jim is survived by his wife, Capri; daughter Taylor Butterfield (Tristan); son, Parker; grandchildren Kathryn and James; his mother, Jackie Fannin; brother Scott (Jeannie); nephews Michael (Cassie) and Matthew; along with many aunts, cousins, and lifelong friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James.
