Jo Ann Detrixhe was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away on June 3, 2024 at the age of 85 surrounded by loved ones. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday June 7, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Mooreland, Oklahoma. Burial will follow in the Mooreland Cemetery.
Jo Ann was born in Higgins, Texas on November 17, 1938 to George Henry Neu and Mildred May (Vosburgh) Neu. Her mother was a teacher at various country schools around Higgins which Jo Ann attended through 12th grade. Her favorite quote from her mother was, "If you can read, you can do anything" and she implemented this into her daily life.
Jo Ann married Yount Smith on September 24, 1956 and from this union had three children, Cindy, Ira, and Debra. She worked as a secretary at Bowman's Garage in Mooreland; however, she made a career out of being the best mother to her three children.
Jo Ann married Benjamin Detrixhe on March 16, 1985. They built a life together at their lake houses where the focus was creating a fun and inviting environment that everyone could enjoy. Many memories were made at their home in Lake Texoma with family and friends including the neighbor's infamous three-legged dog that the family talked about for years. After selling their home at Lake Texoma, they purchased a home and cabins at Foss Lake. She looked forward to Christmas in July at the lake with her kids and grandkids all under the same roof to celebrate. One of her favorite roles to play was that of being a grandmother. She ensured that she built a special relationship with each grandchild.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Jo Ann. She spent most of her days tending to her beautiful rose bushes, making her famous butterscotch brownies, and entertaining her family and guests at the Foss Lake Cabins. Perhaps her favorite thing to do was challenge an opponent to a friendly game of Wahoo. She lived life to the fullest and always greeted everyone with a smile and baked goods.
Jo Ann was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mooreland and the Red Hat Society at Providence Place.
She is survived by her son Ira Smith and wife Cathy; daughter Debra Rounds and husband Kenny; son-in-law Joe Fields; stepson Clendon Detrixhe; 11 Grandchildren: Sierra Elsey and husband Mike; Jocelyn Humphrey and husband Kaleb; Allison Fields; Morgan Lady and husband Seth; Sheldon Rounds and wife Chelsie; Kyle Noble; Hope Smith; Courtney Clark and husband Cody; James Hill; Jodi Davis and husband Dustin; Jill Hill; Jovah Detrixhe; and 23 great grandchildren.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her daughter Cindy Fields; husband Benjamin Detrixhe; parents George and Mildred Neu; sister Rita McPherson; and stepdaughter Vickie Shawcross
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Children's Ministry with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
