Joan Behrmann Obituary
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joan was a lifelong journalist. She earned a master's from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She wrote for the Charlotte Observer, Miami Herald, and Miami News. Joan joined USA TODAY as a founding editor in 1982, and served as executive editor for the Palm Springs Desert Sun and entertainment editor of The Detroit News.
She taught journalism at Miami-Dade Community College and Boston University and co-authored the textbook Questioning Media Ethics.
After retiring, Joan moved to Santa Fe, where she volunteered as a docent at the Santa Fe Opera and served as a president of the Santa Fe Opera Guild.
Joan adored her husband of 53 years, Rabbi Nicolas Behrmann, her children, Laura Cervelli and Dan Jinks, and granddaughters Rena and Rachel Kastigar, as well as her brother Jim Metzner; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held at the Palm Springs Art Museum's Elrod Garden on Sunday, March 29 starting at 4:00 PM.
