With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Joan F. Bernardin, a beloved mother, grandmother, and lifelong advocate for those in need. Joan passed away peacefully at Linda White's Hospice,
Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Born September 1, 1939, in Evansville, Joan was the eldest daughter of Alfred Louis Bernardin II and Frances (McNeely) Bernardin. She grew up in a family deeply rooted in the Evansville community, with her father serving as president of the Bernardin Bottle Cap Company, a pioneering local manufacturer.
Joan had a lifelong love for American Saddlebred Horses that began in her youth, where she quickly became a skilled and accomplished rider. Her natural talent and dedication to the sport led her to extraordinary achievements, especially for young women. Her general love for all horses remained a cherished part of her life, and she carried this passion with her always.
Joan's compassion and understanding of human struggles led her to a career in counseling. She was a certified chemical dependency counselor and along with her life partner, founded Full Measures, a private counseling practice. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued-a true testament to her generous spirit. Through her work, she helped many individuals regain their strength and direction. After retirement, she became a Reiki Master, where she continued to help others.
For over three decades, Joan shared her life with her loving companion, Robert "Bob" Morton. Their deep bond and friendship brought her great happiness, and together they created a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
We could not honor Joni without mentioning Northern Michigan. Joan spent much time at her family cottage in Northern Michigan during the summer months, only missing a few years since birth. She built lifelong friendships in the area, and those who knew her there loved and cared for her deeply. Some of our best family memories were made with Joan in Northern Michigan, and we will always fondly remember her there.
Joan is survived by her son, Scot Brown (Holly) and their two sons, Christopher and Sullivan Brown. She also leaves behind her daughter, Heather McAtee (Brian) and their two daughters, Kathleen Fritz and Abigail McAtee, and one grandson, Kayson (Abigail) Weatherly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Louis Bernardin II and Frances (McNeely) Bernardin; sister, Mary Alice Bernardin; and her Life partner, Robert "Bob" Morton.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. A celebration of Joan's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. where family, friends, and the community will gather to honor her memory. Memorial contributions may be made to organizations supporting addiction recovery or equestrian programs for youth, two causes that Joan held close to her heart.
Joan F. Bernardin's life was a testament to compassion, resilience, and service. She lived with purpose, loved deeply, and helped others without hesitation. Though she will be greatly missed, her spirit will live on in the many lives she touched.
Rest easy, Joni. Your legacy of love and healing will never be forgotten.
