Obituary for D Joan Britton
Joan Britton, 99, formerly of Freeport, IL, died peacefully and went to be with Jesus on May 29th 2025 at home in Rescue, CA surrounded by family. Born the 23rd of January, 1926 in New Castle, IN, she was the older daughter of Hobart and Miriam Garrett. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in Chicago, IL in 1944 and married David C Britton of Chicago, IL in 1946.
Joan called Freeport, IL home for 65 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Freeport for many years and served as the church secretary there for 22 years. Later she became a member of Zion Church, also in Freeport. She was an avid golfer, quilter and traveler. She also enjoyed needlework, word puzzles and chocolate ice cream. Joan was always full of spunk; she maintained her sharp wit and sense of humor until the very end.
The true joys of Joan’s life were her faith in God and her family. She was known, admired and loved for her unwavering faith. Her life reflected the Fruits of the Spirit in all ways from Galatians 5:22. She was a true friend to all who knew her.
Preceding her in death were her husband David, her parents, her sister Betty Skaritka, infant daughter Carol, and son-in-law Gene Griswold. She is survived by Nancy Griswold of Elgin, IL, Barbara (Galen) Carpenter of Rescue, CA, and David (Marty) Britton of Kansas City, MO, Grandchildren Eric (Dawn) Griswold, Clay (Katy) Britton, Dan (Betty) Britton, Mike Britton, Elizabeth (Christian) Jurkowski and Sarah (Joe) Emanuels and 9 Great Grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by the family and friends she leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Church in Freeport, IL on Wednesday July 2nd, 2025 at 11:00 am. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 am. Internment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport immediately following the service.
