Joan Comstock Obituary
Published by Legacy on Mar. 4, 2026.
Joan Comstock died on March 2, 2026 at the age of 94 – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand mother, sister, friend, and citizen.
Joan Christina Weiner Comstock was born in Paterson City, New Jersey, the daughter of Max and Florence Weiner. She grew up in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey and considered herself fortunate to have been raised just outside of New York City. That proximity gave her a sense that the world was large from a young age.
Growing up, at the insistence of her father, Joan took the train alone into New York City to work, which gave her confidence that defined her much of her life.
At Ohio Wesleyan University, Joan majored in Home Economics and was engaged in many extracurriculars including as the President of the Chi Omega sorority and Chairman of the American Red Cross Blood Donors and was known for "her famous New Jersey lung power."
On the same day she graduated from Ohio Wesleyan, Joan married Richard "Dick" Weber and they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where she worked at Whirlpool testing their washer and dryer technology while supporting Dick in his medical school studies. After also living in Bangor, Maine and Monterey, California, Joan and Richard moved their family to settle in Marion, Ohio. After raising five children, she went back to work as a fashion buyer which brought her back to her favorite city, NYC.
Later in life, she married her best friend, Kenny Comstock - opposites do attract - and they shared almost 40 years together in Marion.
Joan was, at her core, an intellectual. Influenced by her father, Joan was a lifelong Democrat who began every morning with her New York Times and especially looked forward to quizzing others during her Sunday crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader who often recommended and leant books to whomever would accept.
Throughout her life, Joan was spirted and worked hard for the benefit of her community. She served on many philanthropic initiatives, including Junior Service Guild and Well Baby Clinic. She was involved in her community through countless other ways including the Choir of Epworth United Methodist Church, hosting and organizing charity luncheons and events, and had a gift for welcoming new families to town and lifelong making friends.
She was often ready for fun and enjoyed a large social circle with friends from all walks of life. She relished cooking for friends and family, hosting parties at her pool in the summers, listening to opera as loud as she pleased, keeping up with the NYT bestsellers, and taking friends to see Oscar-nominated films, and traveling to the Caribbean and many far- reaching places. In her later years she delighted in living in Venice, Florida with Kenny.
A lifelong lover of movement, she took great pleasure in walking her long county road after dinner, and up until the end of her life, participated in group fitness classes. She became an enthusiastic supporter of The Ohio State Buckeye's basketball team and watched them beat Purdue the day before she died.
Joan enjoyed many things: home décor, gardening, fashion, Reece's peanut butter cups, opera, seeing Broadway shows, books of all kinds, watching sunsets in the cornfield from in her kitchen, Frank Sinatra, and PBS programming.
Until the end, Joan remained herself: clear-thinking, good-natured, engaged with current events, and still planning for the future. She was surrounded by family who loved her deeply. In her final hours, we reminisced with photographs: family events, 1960s hairstyles, the fashion she wore in the 1980s, and her many trips with her husband, Kenny.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Christie Austin (Steve Lynch), Paula Wegert, Carolyn Semenoff (Mark), Jackie Weber; grandchildren Christina (Bill), Zoë (Jake), Aaron, Sophie (Shelley), Daniel; great-grandchildren Margot and Clara, a brother Tom Weiner (Linda); and her six step children: Linda (Francis) Forster, Christine (Robert) Haas, Steven (Sharon) Comstock, Lori Barger (Larry French), Robin Comstock, and Julie (Kurt) Lewis; and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Including her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Comstock; a son, Richard Weber; and a sister, Cecilia Weiner.
In life and now in death, Joan is beloved on earth.
