Joan Coston, age 93, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, at her home. Born on November 19, 1932, she was the daughter of Thomas and Maryann (Smith) Proudfit. Joan attended Battle Creek Central High School and dedicated many years of her life to serving as a cashier for National Foods. After retiring, she continued to give back to the community through her volunteer work at Binder Park Zoo, engaging with visitors in the Wild Africa exhibit. Additionally, she shared her passion for health and wellness by teaching exercise classes at Senior Health Partners.
Joan was deeply involved in the activities of her children and grandchildren, serving as a Bluebird Leader and Campfire Leader and supporting them as they showcased their skills in 4-H horse shows. Her love for family was matched only by her affection for animals.
On May 7, 1950, Joan married George William Coston, who preceded her in death on April 13, 2012. She was also preceded by her parents and three brothers: Gordon Terry, Dennis “Oz” Komarck, and John Henry. Joan is survived by three daughters: Connie Mixon, Kathy Douglas, and Julie Truckey; five grandchildren: Jennifer Bradley, Stacy Schweitzer, Kirsten Waltrip, Cory Girdley, and Allison Truckey; six great-grandchildren: Ryland Bowles, Liam Waltrip, Rowan Schweitzer, Jack Schweitzer, Mason Girdley, and Paisley Girdley; one great-great-granddaughter, Charlotte Bowles; one step-grandson Derek Mixon and family, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, March 4, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Paul Parker of Cornerstone Community Church. Interment will follow at Hicks Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Humane Society of South-Central Michigan. www.henryfuneralhome.org.
