Joan Doreen Dunning

Joan Doreen Dunning was born to Joseph and Vivian Dunning on January 16, 1945, in Los Angeles, California. She attended Wonderland Avenue Elementary, and Le Conte Jr High School. She graduated from Hollywood High School, 1962, and then received her Masters and Teaching Credential from the University of Southern California in1967. Joni was a member of Saint Stephen's Episcopal church. She debut at her Cotillion in 1961 and was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Joni was a dedicated instructor for both elementary school students and teachers for 23 years within the L.A. Unified School District. She was committed to transforming urban education and taught for many years at Grape Street elementary school. Interspersed with teaching Joni also enjoyed working in the entertainment industry for several years at ABC, NBC, and CBS. Joni's many interests included social anthropology and art. These pursuits helped fuel her desire to explore over 49 countries around the world. During these travels she made lifelong friends spanning the globe. Joni is survived by her sister, Clothilde, her brother, Gilmore, her nieces Diana, Ananda, and Nephew Joshua, her great nephews Alex, Ethan, Nicholas, Elliot, and great niece Naomi. Her beloved extended family includes many wonderful cousins, Uncles and Aunts residing on both the east and west coast. Joni will be missed deeply by her family, friends, and anyone who was touched by her sweet and loving spirit.
