Joan Howard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 14 to Jun. 18, 2023.
Joan Lander Howard, beloved Mom and "Nonie," passed away May 26, 2023 in Lakeway, Texas. Born October 3, 1932 to John (Jack) and Louise (Ease) Lander in Houston, she lived most of her life there. She grew up on Sunset Boulevard, and as a child delighted in driving a cart pulled by her Shetland pony on the oyster shell streets. A love of horses and athletics led her to compete in horse jumping events through her teens. She graduated from the Kincaid School, and after a brief stint in college, in 1952 married Roland (Rocky) McCauley Howard, the fraternity brother of her brother Jack. Joan and Rocky spent the next fifty-one years together, until Rocky's passing in 2003.

A year after marriage, Joan gave birth to twins Roland (Rocky Jr.) and Richard (Ricky). The pace of life picked up as a third son, Bruce, followed. Joan was an active Mom as her sons grew, supporting all their activities, and keeping up was no problem for her. When Santa surprised the family one Christmas with a trampoline, she climbed up and demonstrated to the boys a series of flips, then said, "that's it," and climbed down.

Joan and Rocky enjoyed many years with close friends and family, with beach trips to Galveston, many gatherings, and sharing a house on the Guadalupe River. Joan was a maker and artist. She took up needlepoint, designing and creating major pieces that took years to complete. She later began hooking rugs, creating her own dyes and colors to carry out her designs. All along, she was a dedicated community volunteer. She joined the Junior League of Houston and took on leadership roles, ultimately as President. She was an active gardener, and became active in the Houston Garden Club, again becoming President. She and Rocky were active long-time members of Westminster United Methodist Church. Joan always welcomed family and friends to the Huckleberry Lane home, particularly friends of her sons.

When her husband Rocky became ill with a series of maladies, she became his caretaker. The two drew closer than ever during this difficult time. In 2006, she suffered the loss of her son Ricky. In recent years, she moved to Lakeway to be closer to family, and delighted in time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joan was predeceased by husband Rocky, son Ricky, and brother Jack. She is survived by son Rocky and his wife Helen, and their family, including James George and his son Roland; Emily with husband Nick and their children Xander, Malcolm and Evie; son Bruce and his wife Debra, with children Sage and Anne; and nieces Becky, Ellen, and Louise and nephew Trey and their families. At Joan's request, there are no services planned. To honor her memory, please reach out to appreciate a loved one.
