Joan Mason Obituary

Joan Consomore Mason

Amherst, MA - Joan Consomore Mason, 92, of Amherst, died peacefully at the Fisher House in Amherst on November 15, 2025.

Born on March 27, 1933 in New York City, Joan was the second of five children to Walter and Muriel Cramp. Joan grew up in the New York area, graduated from Middlebury College, and completed the Harvard-Radcliffe Program in Business Administration (before Harvard Business School formally admitted women).

After marrying Robert Krotkov, Joan devoted herself to raising their four children.

She returned to school to earn a master's degree in Social Work from Smith College and then worked as a psychiatric social worker. She founded the Quaker-based Connecticut Valley Alternatives to Violence program, promoting healing and understanding. She wrote vivid, heartfelt stories about her experiences working with incarcerated individuals.

She felt grateful for the kindness and friendship of her fellow residents of the Clark House in Amherst.

Joan is survived by her son Eric Krotkov (married to Debbie Krotkov); her daughter Sonia Krotkov (married to Scott Norris); her daughter Jasmine Krotkov; her grandchildren Claire Garvin, Grace DeSantis, Gabriel Krotkov; her daughter-in-law "Bert" Szala-Krotkov and granddaughters Kirsten Szala-Krotkov and Sonia Szala-Krotkov; her nieces Jackie McCool, Lisa Cramp, Gina Cramp, Karyn Taylor, Jess Dollar and nephews Lloyd Cramp, James Cramp, and Thomas Cramp. Joan was predeceased by her son Peter Krotkov; her parents; her siblings Mary Pettit, David Cramp, Barry Cramp, and Thomas Cramp; her niece Michelle Pettit and nephew Thomas Pettit; and her former husband Robert Krotkov.

To honor Joan's life-long support for peace, memorial donations may be made to the Alternatives to Violence program (https://avpusa.org/get-involved/donations/).

She was deeply loved and we will miss her.

Yesterday

Eric, Debbie, Sonia, Scott, and Jasmine -

My deepest heart is with you. Your thoughtful care for your mom in her passing has been so brave. I hope you know that the care and love you gave her is light for everyone, and hope for everyone who hopes to end life in the respect you showed her, the dignity you allowed her, and of course how much that showed her your love for her. I'm really sad for you too, because it's just sad no matter how it goes.

All my care to all of you,
David Moon
