Joan Mokrycki Obituary

Joan Isabell Mokrycki, age 93, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on April 3, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John Macaulay and Mary Helen Lawson Macaulay. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John P. Mokrycki; and her sister, Irene Macaulay.

Joan was a beloved and deeply engaged member of the Michigan City community. Her life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of faith, activism, artistic passion and a profound belief in the power of community.

A devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City, Joan was a pillar of its congregation. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, evident in her unwavering commitment to the church and its activities. For more than three decades, her beautiful voice graced the annual performance of Handel's Messiah, a tradition she cherished and that brought joy to countless listeners.

Beyond the church walls, Joan was a tireless advocate for human rights and a passionate participant in the political landscape. She believed deeply in the principles of equality and justice, actively working to promote these values within her community. Her involvement with organizations such as the League of Women Voters exemplified her dedication to informed civic engagement.

Joan possessed a brilliant and creative mind, holding a master's degree in interior architecture and art therapy from the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. This artistic sensibility extended beyond her professional pursuits and into her personal life. She had a remarkable talent for creating warm and welcoming spaces, and her legendary parties were a testament to her generous spirit and love for bringing people together.

A proud member of the Indiana Homemakers Club, Joan also found joy and camaraderie in shared interests and community building within that group. Joan will be fondly remembered for her unwavering support and acknowledgement of those who served the community, often working behind the scenes. She possessed a unique ability to see and appreciate the contributions of everyone, ensuring that unsung heroes were recognized in the human-interest section of The Michigan City News-Dispatch.

Her genuine appreciation for others left a lasting impact on many. Above all, Joan was a true believer in the American Dream, embodying its spirit through her hard work, dedication, and unwavering optimism. She inspired those around her to strive for a better future and to actively participate in shaping their community.

Joan's vibrant spirit, her dedication to her faith and community, and her warm and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of service, creativity and unwavering belief in the good of humanity will continue to inspire for years to come.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Jean Perryman and Jane Poor; grandchildren, Halona A. Poor and Ae-in P. Poor; and great-grandchild, Florence-Jo Helmick.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in Michigan City, Indiana. Arrangements entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
