I never met Joan Farrell Monaghan However, I am aware of how highly she was regarded for her service as President of the Society of Psychiatric Advnced Practice Nurses. The Society has continued to promote the practice of Psychiatrc Advanced Practice Nurses for the benefit of the citizens of New Jersey and surrounding areas.

Joan was a member of the Society of Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses. I believe that she was president at one time. She was very active and quite a dynamo when she was involved. She had a humor and an intelligence that was engaging.
I a couple in therapy when the husband was diagnosed with cancer. He went to Hackensack medical center for treatment. The wife felt invisible to the staff and providers. I put her in touch with Joan. Joan became her advocate and was present to her in a way that my patient felt like she was a human being and had someone on her side to explain what was happening and help her husband get the care and attention he needed.
Joan's death is a big loss to the nurse-patient community.
