Joan E. D. Nelson, age 93, of Grove City, passed away July 2, at her residence.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. followed by her funeral service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. Interment will be at Union Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Peterson Brothers Funeral Home. www.petersonbrothers.com
Joan Eleanor Dorothy Nelson was born on December 24, 1931, at her family's home in Ellsworth Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, the daughter of Arnold and Lydia (Radunz) Mattsfield. She grew up in the Darwin community, was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Darwin and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949. On May 29, 1964, Joan was united in marriage to Howard Nelson and they made their home in Atwater. Joan was employed as a bookkeeper for many years at the Erickson Furniture Store and Lundquist Fine Furnishings in Willmar and later at Rick Plumbing and Heating. Joan enjoyed traveling, camping, reading, crocheting and being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her two daughters, Kathryn Nelson of Atwater and Kristine (and Donald) Anderson of Grove City; three grandchildren, Tori (and Josh) Helmer, Jonathan Nelson and Jayden Anderson (and Layne); and four great grandchildren, Colten, Jaxon and Milo Helmer and Braylen Brayton. Also surviving are two siblings, Joel (and Sandra) Mattsfield of Darwin and Jvonne Larson of Hutchinson; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard in 1994; one sister, June Rick and brothers, Virgil in infancy, John and Jerry Mattsfield.
