Joan Rimawi Obituary

O'Grady Rimawi, Joan
GLENMONT - Joan O'Grady Rimawi, 93, wife of Dr. Karim Rimawi for 55 years, passed away on October 26, 2025, at her home in Glenmont, N.Y. She was surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born on July 1, 1932 in Plattsburgh, N.Y., to Mary A. Labombard (née Leonard) and Thomas L. LaBombard.
Joan received her Bachelor's Degree, with a major in Social Studies and minor in English, from the State University of New York (SUNY). She then received her Masters Degree in Education, also from SUNY. Plus, she completed 54 graduate hours, and obtained Certification in Guidance Counseling.
Joan started her career out as a teacher at both Waterford and Shenendehowa School Districts. She also, became Director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps of Cohoes, N.Y. Then, an Employment Counselor for the N.Y.S. Dept of Labor. After moving, she was an investigator for the N.Y.S. Dept of Social Services, at the Twin Towers in New York City, before eventually returning to Counseling. Teaching was her job, but counseling was her vocation. She counseled anyone in need, whether it be a stranger or a friend.
Joan had a deep love for the Catholic Faith. She attended mass daily. In her spare time, she was an avid movie goer and book enthusiast. But, Joanie's (as she's known to her loved ones) biggest joy in life was her family.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Marianne O'Grady of Glenmont; and two granddaughters, Tara Maloney and Lani Larson (née Maloney) (Bradd), of Glenmont. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Joan Helen was predeceased by her parents, Mary Alice and Thomas Leo LaBombard. Also, her six siblings, Thomas Leonard LaBombard (Peggy), Marie Therese Kopcza (Micheal), Patricia Anne Watson (Frank), John (Jean) LaBombard (ex-wife Nancy), Pierre Michael (Mickey) LaBombard (Dorothy). Additionally, Joan was predeceased by her former husband, John C. O'Grady.
The funeral will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, in Delmar, N.Y., on Monday, November 3, at 10 a.m. The burial will be immediately following the services in Glenmont at Calvary Cemetery.

I met Joan through my work, and I thoroughly enjoyed each visit we had together. Joan was a delight of a person- intelligent, kind, loving, and a bit of a spit fire! It was clear how much she adored Karim and her family, as they did her. She will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the entire family. I never met Joan ( wished I could have, so I could have called her Joanie). What an amazing woman, and an accomplished life she had. I was introduced to the LaBombard family through Michael, who was in the Army (Germany) with my brother Robert. What an awesome teacher she must have been, because of the "Counselor" within her. Reading her obituary and tribute again motivates me to do something meaningful with what years I have left. Praying for Joan and her entire beloved family.
