Joan (Rhodes) Roediger passed away on June 8, 2024 at the age of 89. She was born in
Oak Hill, West Virginia. Joan was a member of many choirs. She attended the Walden Woods Music School in
Hartland, Michigan in 1949, and graduated from Oak Hill, High School in 1952.
Joan moved to Detroit after graduating from high school and worked at the Gas Company in Downtown Detroit in the 1950s and made lifelong friends who formed a Pinochle Club that met for more than 50 years. She also had a career at Mt Clemens High School that spanned over 30 years. Joan has 2 daughters from her 1st husband Erwin Sieloff; Beth and Amy Sieloff.
Joan was a loving mother known for sacrificing her needs out of love and protection for her daughters. In her later years, her daughters discovered that she had saved copious amounts of cards, letters, artwork, photos, and report cards from their childhood.
She married the love of her life John "Jack" Roediger on December 28, 1978. Jack and Joan lived in Harrison Township and later New Baltimore until Jack's passing in 2012. Jack and Jo as they were known, loved to travel, frequented antique sales, and traveled to Frankfort to visit their beloved granddaughters Reagan Jayne and Brooklyn Grace; who fondly remember the love she had for them and that one spot on her right wrist known as Granny's last nerve.
Known for making delicious desserts for family gatherings. She baked all the time, was always ready to serve sweets to others, and had a love of anything that contained peanut butter. Joan was an accomplished gardener and will always be remembered for the beautiful flower gardens surrounding her home. She also loved dancing, reading, antiquing, taking trips to visit friends, and her daughters in Michigan, Hawaii, Washington DC, and trips with family and friends to Alaska, Las Vegas, and Europe. Always active Joan walked 4 - 5 miles per day until she was 85 years of age, and continued to walk on her treadmill until December 2023. She was an avid reader and loved to talk about her collection of antique advertising thermometers.
Most importantly, Joan was extremely sentimental and showed her love in many ways: always sending cards and letters to family, friends, and "friends of the family" on their birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays, or just for no special reason at all. Joan loved buying small gifts that always followed a favorite theme for the recipient. Along with her daughters, favorite son-in-law, and granddaughters, her friends Connie, Bernie, and Gloria often received these fun-loving gifts. She held on to photos, cards, and letters she received from her beloved family and friends. These keepsakes gave her joy as she enjoyed looking at and rereading them often these past few years. Anyone who met her felt her love and experienced her quick-wittedness. She always had a smile and found humor in all situations, even dementia. Her sense of humor and love for Frank Sinatra never waned and was present in her final days. Joan's daughters are extremely grateful for the loving care provided by the staff at the Frankfort Pines, who knew and loved Joan in an indescribable capacity.
In lieu of flowers, Joan's daughters request that family and friends make a donation to the Detroit Goodfellows and mail a note to someone they love.
Joan is survived by daughters Beth Sieloff, and Amy (Tim) Somero, stepdaughters Renee' (Henry) Miller, and Sandra (Scott) Rhoads, grandchildren Reagan Somero, Brooklyn Somero, nieces and nephews Michelle, Cathy, Michalene, Jeffrey, Michael, Art, Paige, Candice, and James.
Joan was preceded by her husband John Roediger, father Layton Jennings Rhodes, sisters Betty Wallace, Shirley Niemer, and Mary Lou Fernandez, brother Layton Rhodes, and nephew Marcus Wallace.
Joan will be buried with her husband at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI at a date yet to be determined. Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home of
