Joan Wyant, 81, longtime Milan resident, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025 at Northern Dutchess Hospital. She was born on December 14, 1943 in Rhinebeck to the late Clarence and Marie (Craft) Wood.
Joan graduated from Staatsburg School and on January 26, 1963 in Pleasant Plains Church in Clinton Corners she married Harry Wyant. Together they moved to Milan to begin their life together. Joan was the owner of Joni’s Grocery in Milan, from the early 1970’s to the mid 1980’s when they sold it. She then went to work as a housekeeper at Bard College. A job that she truly enjoyed because she got to be around the kids. After working there for over 25 years she retired.
Actively involved in politics for the Town of Milan, Joan served on the town board as well as for the recreation department. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening and just being outdoors. Together with her late husband they would enjoy spending time at their home in Ellenburg and enjoying the peaceful Adirondack Mountains. Her greatest treasures in life were her four grandchildren and her animals.
Joan is survived by her son and daughter in law; Robert J. & Lisa Wyant, of Germantown and her daughter and son in law, Angela & Tony Cartagena, of Milan. Four grandchildren; Austin Cartagena and Joshua, Morgan, Jordan Wyant. In addition to her brother-in-law Guy Wyant, and sister-in-law, Mary Juhase Also survived by sister-in-law Tina Wyant and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Harry Wyant, on April 21, 2024.
A celebration of Joan’s life will take place on April 13, 2025 at the Milan Town Hall from 12:00 to 4:00pm. Graveside services will be held privately at the Milan Union Cemetery at a future date. Donations in her memory may be made to the SPCA of Dutchess County 636 Violet Avenue Hyde Park, NY 12538.
