Joann was born on May 20, 1946, to rose Lee and Willis Gray, the cherished firstborn of six children. From an early age, she embraced the responsibility and that came with being the oldest, helping to guide and nurture her siblings with a loving and protective spirit. She was educated in the Wilkinsburg School District, where she formed lifelong friendships and began shaping the strong values of faith, family, and community that would define her life.
As she grew into adulthood, Joann met and married the love of her life, the late Benjamin F. Hammond. Through the years, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering love.
Joann dedicated much of her professional life to serving others. She worked faithfully with the Pittsburgh Public School District, where she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues.
In addition, she built a career in the home health care field, compassionately caring for those in need. Whether in a classroom, a client's home, or her own living room, Joann's nurturing spirit shined brightly.
Her heart for children was extraordinary. Joann was not only a devoted mother but also opened her home as a foster mother to many children over the years. She provided safety, stability, and unconditional love to each child who crossed her threshold. To know Joann was to know that her door was and heart were always open.
Joann was truly the life of othering gathering. Her vibrant personality, joyful laughter, and warm smile could light up any room. She loved shopping trips, sharing delicious meals, and spending time with family. She treasured her children and family, who were the center of her world.
Joann's legacy is one of love, generosity, strength, and celebration of life. She will be remembered for her big heart, her welcoming, and the countless lives she uplifted through her kindness and care.
Joann leaves to cherish her memory, her mother Rose Lee Gray; children, John Cargile, Darnell Cargile, Cardella Cargile, Monica Barham, Montell Hammond, Rodger Hammond; bonus children, Jeffrey Hammond, Barry Hammond, Gregory Hammond; and Goddaughter, Stacey Kelly. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great grand; siblings, Gilbert Gray, Giles (Anita) Gray, Lee Gray, Mona Carter; brother-in-law, Raymond Hammond; and a host of nieces; nephews; family; and friends. Joann is now reunited with her late father, Willis Gray; husband, Benjamen Hammond; and brother, Douglas Gray.
