JoAnn Okun Obituary

JoAnn Okun

JoAnn Okun, beloved wife, mother, nana, and friend, passed away on May 27th, 2024, surrounded by love. She was born on August 4th, 1933, to Harry and Rae Seitz, married the love of her life, Fred Okun, and enjoyed life together for 65 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Geraldine Singer. She lived a life rich in love, laughter, and cherished memories.

JoAnn leaves behind a legacy of love through her daughters, Robin, Shelly Fruchtman (Gary), Amy Nistel (Barry); her grandchildren, Zackary Dunivin, Zoe Dunivin (Adam Fisch), Joshua Goldberg (Amanda), Adam Goldberg (Andrea), Cydney Goldberg, Drew Saltzstein (Jenny), Nikki Saltzstein Hochman (Michelle); and three bonus grandchildren. Nothing brought JoAnn more joy than her great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Margo, and Aliza Goldberg, Aster Goldberg, Noah Saltzstein; along with six bonus great-grandchildren.

JoAnn and Fred spent many years in BallenIsles, Florida, where she enjoyed the warm sun, playing golf, and shopping. Her love for Mahjong brought her together with friends in both Florida and in Toledo. JoAnn was an avid reader and took great satisfaction knitting special creations for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In her later years, JoAnn found comfort and companionship at The Woodlands, where she maintained treasured friendships and forged new connections. Even in her final days, she was surrounded by love and support at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Her family is grateful for the compassionate care from a dedicated staff.

JoAnn lived and died on her terms, guided by the motto "better to look good than to feel good". As her grandchildren would say, their Nana ended life on a high note.

Graveside services for JoAnn will be held on Thursday, May 30th, at 10:30 a.m. at Beth Shalom in Oregon, OH. Following the service, friends and family are invited to gather at Temple Shomer Emunim for the meal of condolence until 3:30 p.m. Shiva will be held on Friday from 1:00 – 4:00 at the home of Gary and Shelly Fruchtman.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of JoAnn can be made to Temple Shomer Emunim or a charity of donor's choice.

Arrangements by the Robert H. Wick/Wisniewski Funeral Home (419) 535-5840.

I can't believe a year has passed. Time goes by so quickly now. At least it seems too when you get older. I miss seeing you with Amy at Temple. But I am now at Chabad. You always looked so stately and lovely. JoAnn you were and probably still are the whole package. Your hair, makeup and clothing were to perfection. And that little smile of yours. You are now a blessed memory. Baruch Hashem.

I knew JoAnn just to say hello at Temple or at different events over the years. She would smile at me and nod. She always looked so elegant and stately. And I wondered if she remembered me. But it didn't seem to matter. I know her daughter Amy who has a special place in my heart. When my own mother of blessed memory passed, Amy was there to help support me during Shiva. And I will never forget her kindness. I was at the funeral service for the daughters father. The love they have for there parents is wonderful. The one story I do remember is how he would talk to his daughters and say lets have dessert and it was usually a bowl of cereal. The daughters of the Okun Family were truly blessed with caring parents. Sandi Grohnke
