Joanne DeFelice Obituary

Joanne DeFelice
April 18, 1937 - October 19, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joanne Mary DeFelice, 88, of Branford, who entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 19th, at her daughter's home, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Victor DeFelice for 68 years, who passed less than two months ago; and the mother of the late Victor DeFelice Jr.
She was born in New Haven, on April 18th, 1937, to the late Pasquale and Anna Fonda Laudano. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, John (Jack) DeFelice; and her sisters, Lucille Gambardella, Antoinette Criscuolo, Patricia DiNello and Marie Gambardella. She is survived by her brother, Andrew Laudano and wife, Marylou.
She leaves behind her daughter, Therese; her son-in-law, Mark; and her cherished grandsons, Mark and Matthew Kowalski, who were the absolute joy of her life. It was her one request or as she would jokingly call it, her one demand, that they attend St. Mary's around the corner from her home so she could spend time with them every day after school.
Joanne had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed and at home, whether in her kitchen in Branford or Sarasota, Florida. She turned every meal into a labor of love, especially during the holidays, making hard work look so effortless. In addition to being the heart of her family, she was also the beloved "Hostess with the Mostest" at her son's restaurant, The Calypso River Grill, in Branford. With her warm smile, gift of gab, and welcoming nature, she greeted everyone as if they were an old friend. Her presence at the restaurant was a reflection of her spirit, filled with love, hospitality, and a sense of belonging, while enjoying every moment there. Though we will miss her, we take great comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her husband, her son, and those who went before her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 29, at 11:00am at St. Vincent DePaul Church of St. Pio Parish, in East Haven. Burial will be private, with interment in the All Saints Cemetery Mausoleum. The W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, is in care of arrangements. Saying goodbye is never easy. Especially to a woman who meant so much to so many. The whimsy in her smile, the sparkle in her eyes, Joanne was there for each one of us. She was a kind and gentle ear, a shoulder, a FABULOUS kitchen magician and a woman who loved her family above all else. Family included all who came through the door and sat for coffee, sipped some chardonnay at Calypso (back in the day), or just took the time to chit chat. She kept us in line and made us chuckle. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with everyone whose heart was touched by this very special woman who brought so much to so many. Thank You Joanne....having you as a special angel warms my heart, God Bless you for being such a wonderful part of our lives.

To the best, sweet little nana who was always there for us. You made every holiday, birthday and just a visit for no reason special. And we took it for granted, not even thinking the effort you put into everything because you made it look so easy. Mom would say you were a strict disciplinarian, but we never saw that. Our favorite part of the day was walking to your house after school with our favorite foods waiting for us, while you and poppy were so happy to see us each and every time. Your smiles would light up the room. You both taught us so much and we were blessed to have you as grandparents. It aches to lose you both so quickly but fly high with the angels nana along with poppy. We hope to always make you both proud and we will always take care of mom. We love you and will remember you always!

Therese and family, my sincere condolences. Your mom was a little spitfire at Calypso. She took everyone under her wing and could talk to anyone and make a friend in five minutes. She certainly had the gift of gab! To lose your mom and dad so close to each other I can't imagine. I have no words except may time heal the loss and you hold close all the memories of them both. May they both rest in peace being together now
