Joe Keaton, age 80, of Whitesburg passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s. He was born July 30, 1944, in Villa Rica, Georgia to the late, William Joseph Keaton and the late, Freddie Mae Morris Keaton.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army, having received many awards and accolades for his accomplishments. Following his service to our Country, Joe began what would become a lifelong career in the construction industry. He worked for several large construction companies in Atlanta throughout his career. He later began another career, working for Georgia Power at Plant Yates and ending his career at Plant Wansley. In the late 1980’s, Joe worked on many construction projects at the University of West Georgia, including building outdoor fountains, swings, bridges, and was responsible for constructing the iron gates and iron handrails throughout the campus. As an excellent welder, Joe also constructed handrails for many of the schools throughout Carroll County. Of all the construction projects Joe was involved with, his most rewarding work was done at Grace Baptist Church in Whitesburg, where he was one of the founding members.
In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, June Keaton; and by two brothers, Dennis Keaton and Randall Keaton.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Alan Jones. Joe will always be remembered as “Mammoo” to his surviving grandchildren, Josh(Andy), Kyle(Kylie), Alli(Kyle) and great-grandchildren, Harper, Wyatt, Windom, and Estelle. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Armstrong; two brothers, Harold Keaton and Billy Keaton; his nieces, Karen, Tara, and Buffy (whom he loved like his own daughters), several other nieces, nephews, and a number of other relatives. Also left to cherish his memory is his dear friends, Dustin and Trina.
