Visit the Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Elizabethtown website to view the full obituary.
Joe Marcus McLaughlin, 58, of Clarkton passed away Monday, January 30, 2017. He is preceded in death by his parents Angus and Ann McLaughlin and step-dad Sing Singletary. Survivors include several cousins, including Kathy Powell who unselfishly stepped into to help him after his mother's death. Joe, at the age of 15, was in a car accident that left him a paraplegic. His mother cared for him until her untimely death. Most of his past time was spent using a ham radio, where he communicated with people in all the states and some foreign countries. He was very well known in the radio world. The family would like to extend a special thank you to several caregivers: Sharon Burney, who took wonderful care of him, Albert Moore, who came to the aid of Marcus and his mother Ann and many other care givers over the years. A walk-thru viewing will be on Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 10 am-12 noon at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home for anyone who would like to pay their respects followed by a graveside service at 2 pm in Clarkton Cemetery officiated by Rev. Charles Hester.

I will remember the late-night good times on ham radio with Marcus, W4ZAN and my late neighbor, Rick KA1CSL (Swansea, MA), from 2007 and earlier. Those were the best of times, lots of good humor and technical discussions. As you always used to say to me in jest, Marcus, "[Good Night] Rest in Peace you ol' Democrat!" 73 and God Bless,

To the family, Marcus and I were classmates at Clarkton School through fifth grade. He was one of the classmates who visited me a few years later when I returned to Bladen County for my dear grandmother's funeral. I am grateful to know that Marcus lived the remainder of his life with courage, dignity and his inimitable sense of humor. May God sustain all of you with His comfort and peace in the days ahead. Sincerely, Gloria Gilbert Cloninger

Marcus, Seems like I've known you forever. We went thru school together as you were a year younger than I. Always enjoyed the chats on FB with you and sharing music interests together. Going back to the days when music was actually music. :) You will certainly be missed by your friends and family. I know from our talks that you are one happy young man today. You are not only able to walk those streets of Gold now you have also been reunited with your Mom and Dad. Your Mom was always by your side and I think that she and God made you strong so that you could survive the life that you had. May you RIP my friend.

Have certainly enjoyed talking to and getting to know Marcus on Ham Radio for last 20 or so years. Did not know him personally but the occasion just never never occurred since I am in North Central Georgia. He was a great person to communicate with and we will miss him.
