Joe was born on December 26, 1949, to the late Mr. Cornelius Nelson and the late Mrs. Mary Reid Singleton on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Joe retired from The Ohio State University. He spent many years in Canton, Ohio where he lived with his sister Minnie Saunders before marrying and moving to Columbus, Ohio with his family. Joe passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
Joe is survived by his wife, Johnnie Singleton; daughters, Tiea Lawrence of Columbus, Ohio and Tameca (Andre) Bumper of Columbus, Ohio; one grandchild, Darius Bumper; and special niece and nephews, Cornelius Lawrence, Ashanti Lawrence, Terrence Lawrence, Gianni Lawrence-Ford, and DeVarian Lawrence-Phillips. Joe is preceded in death by eleven siblings: Luther Reid, Elouise Singleton, Alma Moseley, Minnie Saunders, Fred Nelson, Arthur Nelson, Cornelius Nelson, Alonza Nelson, Virginia Campbell, Bertha Nelson, and Sophie McKelvey. He leaves to cherish in loving memory his siblings: Celestine Cook of Detroit, Michigan, Thelma Washington (Joseph) of Charleston, South Carolina, George Nelson (Rosalind) of Canton, Ohio, Addy Nelson of Charleston, South Carolina and Esteline Nelson of Charleston, South Carolina; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Joe cherished his family and was known to be Mr. Fix It! He always had an "I-can-do-it-myself" spirit when it comes to fixing things and would be ready to tackle any job with his toolbox. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends; however, we will cherish all the memories of him.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, at 11:00am at Bethany Christian Church, 1130 E. Livingston Ave, Columbus, OH 43205. Cards and Flowers may be delivered to the Lawrence-Singleton home. Call or text 614-425-2711 for the address.
