Joe Don Skinner

Joe Don Skinner, 89, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in Pampa.

Services will be 10:00 AM Friday, October 4, 2024, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Vondel Stevens, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be 2:00 PM, Friday at Texola Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

The Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 6:00-7:30 PM.

Joe was born June 28, 1935, in Texola, Oklahoma to Marvin and Claircy Skinner. He graduated from Texola High School in 1954. After high school, Joe joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany for two years. On November 21, 1954, he married the love of his life, Jane Gipson. After returning home from the military in the late 1950’s, they made their way to the Pampa community. Joe worked at Cabot for 40 years until he retired in 1999. While working at Cabot, he opened D & S Suzuki shop from the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s. In 1999 Joe opened J & J Motors and sold cars until 2006. In 2006, he changed the name to J & J Karts and continued to work there until he was 88 years old. He spent most weekends with his family traveling around to motorcycle races while they were growing up. He never missed an event or game of any of his children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Joe was a long time member of the Optimist Club for several years. He was an avid bowler and was a member of Pampa’s Bowling League. Joe coached basketball, football, and baseball. He loved watching sports on tv, going to the casino, and working with his hands. Joe enjoyed taking care of his yard and had the best yard in the neighborhood. He loved his family and would take all his children and grandchildren to family reunions all over the country. Joe loved paying his grandchildren for getting straight A’s in school and even bought all nine of them their first car. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Skinner; parents, Marvin and Claircy Skinner; son, Joe Skinner Jr.; siblings, Gordon Skinner, Wanda Chase, Neal Skinner, and Byrl Skinner.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff Skinner and wife Kim and Jerry Skinner all of Pampa; siblings, Glen Skinner and Wife Caroline of Fort Worth, Rose Mary Wright of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Pete Skinner and wife Billie of Burleson; grandchildren, Erika Ellis and husband Randy, Jade Skinner and husband Brock Couch, Halei Skinner, Heath Skinner and wife Samantha, Hayden Skinner and wife Kaelee, Huston Skinner, Colby Brazile and wife Lisa, Brittany Brazile, Cooper Brazile and wife Jessica, Casey Trimble, Jera Williams and husband Sean, Rhett Skinner and wife Sanya, J.T. Skinner, and Josh Salazar and wife Oyuky; great grandchildren, Brynlei and Adilyn Ellis, Caelan and Declan Couch, Dempsey Story, Willow, Meadow, and August Skinner, Hayz and Hayzel Skinner, Jack, Eve, and Guy Brazile, Siri Lundberg, Ella Brazile, Emmy Trimble, Jaden, Jerni, and Jaze Salazar, Rhylee, Bennett, Maddox, and Novalee Williams, Gray Skinner, and expecting Via Mae Skinner soon; special friend and caregiver, Leticia Salazar; and numerous extended family members.
