Joe Tandy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Groce Funeral Home & Cremation Services- Lake Julian on Dec. 4, 2025.
Joe Linden Tandy Jr. passed away Wednesday December 3, 2025, surrounded by his wife and immediate family. Joe is known for his many passions in life including his family, friends, faith, community, and classic cars, but his greatest passion was his wife Linda who was the love of his life.

Joe was born on January 2, 1940, at Biltmore Hospital. He grew up in Asheville, attended Biltmore School, Valley Springs High School class of 1958, studied engineering at Brevard Junior College 1959 and completed his degree at Western Carolina University in 1961 in Industrial Arts. He was preceded in death by his father Joe Linden Tandy Sr., mother Alice Stevens Tandy, sister Alice Tandy Helm, sister Linda Duckworth Tandy, brother-in-law Orves Young and Larry Bowers, and granddaughters Krista Nichole Tandy and Emily Marie Tandy.

He is survived by his wife Linda Sluder Tandy of nearly sixty-five years, son Joe Linden Tandy Jr. and wife, Holly, son Michael Bruce Tandy and wife, Caren, grandsons Steven Michael Tandy, Wesley Joe Tandy, and Christopher Miles Tandy and his wife, Clara. He is also survived by his sisters Louise Tandy Young and Lil Tandy Bowers and brother-in-law Jim Helm. The Family would also like to note that he is also survived by Krista's mother Lisa, Wesley's mother Lori, and the brother he never had and lifelong friend Don Lance. Joe would also want to recognize the affection and respect that he had for Bob and Betty Morgan and family, the Rheems family and Reverend Ed Graham and family.

His work career included employment at Universal Molded Fiberglas Bristol Virginia, Singer Fidelity High Point North Carolina, General Electric Hendersonville, North Carolina, NC General Contractor Buncombe, Henderson and Transylvania Counties, and in his retirement, part time at Home Depot where he helped set up the Enka Store opening. He got the material donated and provided the labor to build the baseball dugouts at Brevard College.

His hobbies included being a spectator of almost all sports including college football and basketball, Nascar, and attending small track races at the former Asheville Speedway. He played golf for many years with a regular foursome and nickel/dime poker with a group of friends who have all already passed. Joe is known for his joy in helping others. He participated in the home owner's associations for several projects and served as the president of the home owner's association for St. John's Commons in Fletcher North Carolina for eighteen years. He was deacon and Sunday school superintendent for Arden Presbyterian Church, the Home Builders Association local chapter president where he served on the Ethics Committee. Joe served several years as president of Skyland Fire Department Board of Directors. This was special to Joe because his mother Alice Tandy and Colonel Cary, who developed Royal Pines, organized the establishment of fire and emergency services to South Buncombe County. While employed at General Electric, Joe made possible the installation of lights for the baseball fields at Valley Springs School. He also served on the Limestone Township Board committee and on the City of Fletcher Planning board for eighteen years. After retirement he did not slow down and continued to make trips for his son Joe and wife Holly Tandy's transportation business.

A memorial service will be held at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden, North Carolina at 1:00 pm, Saturday December 13, 2025 officiated by Reverend Porter Jennings. Friends will be received at Groce Funeral Home after the memorial service until 3:30 pm. A graveside service will be held with family at a later date. The family wants to thank Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731 for their care and compassion and would appreciate memorial donations in Joe's name.
