Joe Tanner Obituary

TANNER, Joe D.

(1938–2024)

Joe D. Tanner, a lifelong advocate for Georgia's environment and public policy, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2024, at the age of 86. Born in Twin City, Georgia, Tanner's passion for the outdoors and commitment to conservation guided his career. As the first and longest-serving Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Tanner played a crucial role in shaping state environmental policies. During his tenure, he consolidated 38 state agencies to create DNR. He was a driving force behind landmark legislation, including the Shore Protection Law, Marshlands Protection Act, and the Heritage Trust Act of 1975. His efforts continue to protect Georgia's marshes and beaches, which comprise one-third of all marshes along the U.S. East Coast. During his 18-year tenure as Commissioner, his efforts continue to protect approximately 400,000 acres of Georgia's most valuable natural resources.

Tanner also led the 1994 Flood recovery, served as Georgia's Labor Commissioner, and founded Joe Tanner & Associates, a respected lobbying firm. In 2024, he was honored with the Rock Howard Conservation Achievement Award for his lifetime dedication to ecological stewardship.

Tanner was deeply connected to his family and community, always prioritizing those he loved. He is survived by his two sons, Blake and Scott (Dawn); his long-time partner, Rebecca Gibbs; stepdaughter, Jamie Gibbs Teal (Brad); four grandchildren, Clare, Kremson, Allie, and Griffin; three great-grandchildren; beloved pets; and many other close family members and friends.

A public memorial service will be held on December 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield, GA, followed by a State Honor Ceremony at Liberty Plaza in Atlanta, GA, at 2:00 PM. Donations may be made to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Foundation in lieu of flowers. GADNR Foundation Donate

He was the best DNR Commissioner that has served. I was an employee for 34 years. He introduced us to Total Quality Management. My sympathies go out to his family.

Joe helped me by representing my company, SouthStar Funding, in the 2002 GA legislature and then a year later, by representing our mortgage industry and helping save several companies from going under. Thank you again Joe and your team! We have truly lost one of Georgia´s greats.
