Joella Dunaway Giles

Joella Dunaway Giles, 77, of Pineville, NC, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025. She was born on April 14, 1948, in Charlotte, NC, to the late George Leonard Dunaway and Laura Rhyne Dunaway.

Jo graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1966 and from Central Piedmont Community College in 1967. She went on to work for Dr. Jim Baucom as a dental hygienist for 20 years, where she built lasting friendships with both patients and colleagues.

After her years in dentistry, Jo dedicated 23 years to Beverly Woods Elementary as both a teacher and administrative assistant. She spent much of that time in the Exceptional Children's classroom, where she worked to ensure every child, regardless of ability, had a positive and successful elementary school experience. She ended her career as the front office secretary, supporting the school with her trademark warmth, care, and dedication.

Joella loved cheering for the Carolina Panthers, creating arts and crafts with her Cricut and embroidery machine, and traveling to Sunset Beach, where she especially enjoyed beach music and time by the ocean. More than anything, she cherished being with her family and spending time with her grandchildren, who lovingly knew her as "GrammyJo."

She is survived by her children, JD Giles (Jessica) and Andy Giles (Mandy); her grandchildren, Morgan Giles, Blake Giles, Drew Giles, and Abbey Giles; her sister, Georgia Coyle (Chris); her dear friend of over 20 years, Nancy Howie; and her beloved dog, Charly.

She will be remembered with love by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Via Health Partners (formerly Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region) or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
