John Andrews Obituary

Published by Weed Corley Fish Funeral Homes and Cremation Services - North on Oct. 4, 2017.
John B. "Bunny" Andrews of Austin, Texas passed away on October 4, 2017 at the age of 86. Bunny grew up in Dallas, Texas where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School. He moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and played quarterback for the Longhorns. After graduating, he worked in sporting goods for 50+ years traveling all over Texas. He remained involved in high school athletics and, as a result, was awarded with induction into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame as a special category inductee in 1997. He was also honored by Texas Relays for his 60+ years as a starter/referee. Bunny never met a stranger. He valued friendship more than anything in the world and was happiest surrounded by friends and family laughing and telling stories. He was as kind as he was generous. If you met him, you would remember him and vice versa- he never forgot a face or a name. He loved sports, visiting with coaches, being a part of Coach Royal's "lunch bunch", spending time with his family and vacationing at the family cabin in Taos, New Mexico. He was an amazing father, grandfather and friend and will be missed terribly. He is survived by his son David Andrews; son Danny Andrews and wife Mel; daughter Jennifer Andrews; stepsons Rusty, Rick and Chuck Boykin; grandsons Brian and Kevin Andrews and Spencer and Jack Boykin; sister-in-law BJ Andrews; niece Lisa Andrews Ard, niece Betsy Andrews Dabbs; niece Melissa Andrews. He is preceded in death by his wife Jan, his brother Rooster Andrews, his nephew Griff Andrews and his niece Susan Andrews. A special thank you to Dr. Chawla at Texas Oncology and to the nurses and doctors at Seton Northwest for their kindness and care. It meant more than we can say. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Austin Animal Shelter. His shelter dog, Nellie, was his constant and loyal companion. A memorial service and reception will be held at 10am on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish, 3125 N Lamar Blvd in Austin.

Although I haven't seen Bunny in over 20 years he will be sorely missed. He never forgot a name. He and I had great fun and laughs when we would meet up on the road.

There are people in this world that you meet and just take an immediate liking to because they touch you in a wonderful way. They have a gift and you know that they are special. That was Bunny. He always had a big, sweet and most of all genuine smile and wave to share -- often along with a funny story or two. We loved our conversations with Bunny. To say that we are going to miss him is an understatement. The world is not quite as nice without Bunny in it. We send our thoughts and prayers for comfort to his entire family that he loved with all his heart.

Bunny will be missed by all who knew him, including me. A stranger was just a friend he never met.

Bunny was a great friend and neighbor for many years. We loved the stories he shared about the many interesting sports people he met during his travels as a salesman. He was always so positive and uplifting; we shared many laughs together. He cherished his family and told many great stories of the get-togethers at the Taos cabin.

Loved sharing grandsons with Bunny (Danny's sons' Kevin and Brian). Sat together at many a ballgame and many family celebrations. Bunny always barbecued for Father's Day. He was a fine gentleman. We are going to miss him.
